Evaluation of Selected Teasle Gourd Germplasm (2016 – 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out at the experimental field of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur, Bangladesh to evaluate the teasle gourd germplasm for yield, quality and development of promising teasel gourd lines for variety development and future breeding program. Seven genotypes were evaluated during the summer season of 2016. Observation on different morphological and yield attributing characters were recorded from five randomly selected plants from each germplasm. The line MD009 required the longest days (125.67) and MD015 required the shortest days (99.33). The highest number of fruits/ plant was recorded in MD010 (63.33.) while MD016 (16.66) produce the lowest fruit. Among the lines MD015 (74.0 g) produced the heaviest fruit while lightest fruit (38.13 g) was from MD016.The highest fruit wt./plant was recorded from MD010 (2786.70g) and the lowest weight was MD015 (1253.30g). The longest fruit was observed in MD004 (9.40cm) while the shortest was MD009 (6.23cm). The line MD015 (5.06cm) produced the widest fruit while MD009 (3.63cm) produced the lowest wide fruit. In case of inner flesh thickness it was found that except MD004 and MD016 all the lines produced the longest identical inner flesh thickness and ranges were (0.46-0.53cm). In case of fruit color, most of the lines produced green color fruit except MD015, which produced yellow orange colored fruit. Considering the yield contributing characters and fruit qualities some germplasm are found promising. So, the lines MD003, MD004, MD009 and MD010 can be selected for AYT.

Objectives:

The present research programme has been undertaken to evaluate the newly collected 7 teasle gourd germplasm to develop a new variety of teasle gourd.

Methodology:

The present experiment was carried out at the experimental field of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur, Bangladesh. Seven genotypes were evaluated during the Kharif-1 season of 2016. Healthy and disease free rhizome of teasle gourd were planted in plots of 7.5 m x 1.0 m size during middle of February, 2016. Half of cowdung and all of S, Zn, B and P @ 75 kg/ha were applied during final land preparation. Rest of cowdung, and each of N and K @ 50 kg/ha were applied as basal in pit. Rest of K was applied after 20 days of transplanting. After that, rest of N and K in 3 equal installments respectively were applied at 20 days interval. Observation on different morphological and yield attributing characters were recorded from five randomly selected plants from each germplasm. Harvesting of teasle gourd was done at the mature green stage when a few number of fruits change colour from green to red considering consumer preference. Days to harvesting, number of fruit per plant, average fruit weight, fruit weight per plant, fruit length, fruit width, fruit skin colour, inner flesh thickness were measured. The fruit yield of teasle gourd per plant was recorded as average of cumulative yield of all harvesting at mature fruit stage of five plants and measured in gram.
