Regional Yield Trial of Spinach Lines (2016 – 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted with two selected spinach lines with BARI Palongshak 1 (check) at the research field of Olericulture Division of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during winter season of 2016-2017 to develop a late flowering variety of spinach. Significant difference was obtained in days to 50 % flowering. The line SO-0048 took the longest days (66) to flowering and the line SO-0047 (57.67) days and BARI Palongshak-1took the shortest days (50.67) to50 % flowering. The highest plant height (38.90cm) was recorded from SO-0047 which was identical to the line SO-0048 (38.50 cm) and the lowest was from BARI Palongshak 1 (32.67cm). Maximum number of leaves (24.73) was recorded from BARI Palongshak 1 and the lowest identical leaves number were recorded from the line SO-0047 and SO-0048 (19.67 and 18.10) respectively. The line SO-0048 produced the longest leaves (34.30cm) and the line SO-0047 and the variety BARI Palongshak 1 produced the identical leaf length. There was no significant difference in leaf breadth. The highest marketable yield per plant (151.33g) was recorded from BARI Palongshak 1 (151.33g) which was identical to SO-0048 (146.33g) while the lowest yield was SO-0047 (131.67g). The highest calculated yield per hectare was obtained from BARI Palongshak 1 (39.17t) which was identical to SO-0048 (38.12t) and the lowest was SO-0047 (29.96 t). In case of qualitative parameter, the line SO-0048 produced medium size, light green colour, ovate shape and succulent large leaf with short petiole while SO-0047 showed medium size, round shape deep green colour with short petiole but BARI Palongshak 1 produced large round shape green colour succulent leaf with long petiole. SO, considering of late bolting nature and yield potentiality the lines SO-0048 was selected to release as a late variety of spinach.

Objectives:

To develop a new late flowering variety of spinach.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Olericulture Division, HRC, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur, during winter season of 2016-17. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The seeds of selected two spinach lines and varieties were sown on 22 November, 2016 maintaining 15 x 10 cm spacing. The land was fertilized with cowdung-N-P-K @10t-200-100-150 kg/ha respectively. The entire quantity of cowdung , P were applied during final land preparation. N and K were applied as top dress in three equal installments at 21, 28 and 35 days after sowing. Thinning, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Harvesting was done on 6 January, 2017. Data on days to 50% flowering, plant height (cm), no. of leaves/plant, leaf length (cm), leaf breadth (cm), marketable yield/plant (g), and yield (t/ha) were recorded and statistically analyzed.

Considering late flowering nature and yield potentiality the lines SO-0048 may be recommended to release as a late variety of spinach.
