Evaluation of Selected Lettuce Lines (2016 – 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five advanced lettuce lines with check (var. BARI Lettuce-1) were included in trial at the horticultural field of HRC, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during Rabi season of 2016-2017. Variation was observed among the advanced lines in respect of yield and yield contributing characters. Number of leaves/plant varied significantly among the lines. Maximum number of edible leaves per plant was counted from LS-0014 (12 no.) and minimum were from from LS-0012 (9.86). Highest marketable leaf yield was obtained from the check variety BARI Lettuce 1 (18.63 t/ha) followed by LS-0012 (16.04 t/ha) and the lowest in LS-0011 (13.26 t/ha). Most of the lines produced light green to deep green colored leaves. The lettuce line LS-0011 produced attractive meroon colored leaves and produced seed in local climatic condition. Considering marketable yield, leaf color and seed producing ability, the lines LS 0011 and LS 0007 were selected for advanced yield trial.

Objectives:

To evaluate the lettuce germplasm for yield and quality of edible leaves as well as seed production potentiality with a view to develop a new variety of lettuce.

Methodology:

The evaluation trial was conducted at the Horticultural field of HRC, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during Rabi season of 2016-2017. Four exotic lettuce lines with check variety BARI lettuce-1 were included in this trial. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications in a 1.2 x 3.0 m unit plot maintaining 45 x 40 cm plant spacing. Seeds were sown in seed bed on 02 October, 2016 and seedlings were transplanted in the field on 03 November 2016. Manures and fertilizer were applied at the rate of cowdung 10 ton, urea 100 kg, TSP 100 kg and MoP 150 kg per hectare. The entire quantity of cowdung, TSP and half of each of MoP were applied during final land preparation. The rest of MoP and Urea were applied as top dress in two equal installments. Irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data were taken on leaf yield, leaf characters and seed yield of the lines. The data were analyzed statistically.
