Evaluation and Characterization of Drumstick Germplasm (2016 – 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on collection and evaluation of drumstick germplasm was conducted at the experimental field of Olericulture Division of Horticulture Research Centre (HRC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur during the season of 2010-11 to onward and this year (2016-17), a study on evaluation of selected seven drumstick lines was conducted. The drumstick line: MO 0025 found to be as seasonal natured having good quality with individual pod weight (61.53 g), while four lines viz., MO 0001(1), MO 0007, MO-0008, MO-0011 and MO-0012 are considered as off-seasonal promising lines having 40-50 g, average individual pod weight. Yearly average per plant yield indicated that the lines MO 0001(1) exhibited maximum yield (12.75 kg) followed by line MO 0012 (13.23 kg) and line MO 0011. These lines are capable to produce flower two to three times in a year. No major pest and diseases found to invasion in the Moringa lines. The experiment with selected lines may be repeated for confirming the results and increasing mother plants in next year.

Objectives:

To evaluate germplasm to characterize the local drumstick variability for finding out the superior lines considering earliness/ year round, yield and yield contributing character, quality (amount of Vitamin A & C and other minerals) followed by develop drumstick varieties in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

There were 27 drumstick germplasm collected from the nook and corner of the country (one line collected from India) and the study is being conducted at Central Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Joydebpur since June 2010. Of the collected germplasm, there were 14 germplasm collected from Rajshahi and Ishwardi region as stem cuttings: 75- 150 cm long with diameters of 7-15cm and 5 cuttings of each line were kept in a dry shady place for three days. The cuttings of drumstick were planted (1/3^rd of the length in the soil) in the main field on August 01, 2011under a replicated trial in the experimental field (fencing side) maintaining 5 meter spaced between two planting hole. Manures and fertilizers were applied as of recommended dose (urea-200g, TSP-250g and MoP-150g) per plant (Aliet al., 2009). In 2012 more 11 new lines were collected from Rajshahi and Bogra region and transplanted in a separate block maintaining same manner. Now, all lines have established and characterization has been started. Data on physio-morphological and other horticultural traits are being recorded and mean data have been compiled. Intercultural operations and propagation techniques are being started.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the flowering and pod setting behavior over time, seven moringa lines viz: MO 0001(1), MO 0007, MO 0008, MO 0011 and MO 0012 selected as year round type and MO 0013 and MO 0025 were included as seasonal type. As the moringa is a perennial crop and environment is not static in every year, therefore, further investigations on selected lines needs to be conducted to confirm the results. Simultaneously, saplings of same lines are transplanted this season (May 2017) for increasing mother plants.
