Hybridization of Tomato for Developing Hybrid Tomato Variety for Winter and Summer (2016 – 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A hybridization work among nine parents of tomato inbreds was developed at the experimental field of Olericulture Division of Horticulture Research Centre (HRC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur during the winter season of 2016-17 to develop tomato hybrid variety for winter and summer season. Crossings work was done following half diallel fashion. The seeds of crossed (F₁) along with parents were collected and preserved for assessing combining ability and heterosis during summer and winter season of 2017-18 (The summer F₁ combinations have already sown on May15, 2017 for studying combining ability and heterosis).

Objectives:

To produce F₁ tomato seeds with selected parents for evaluating combining ability and heterosis in next season.

Methodology:

One set of inbreeds having nine variability in respect of earliness, fruit size, number of fruits, resistance to bacterial wilt (BW) and root-knot nematode (RKN) were included in this crossing program (The tomato inbreeds are developed by AVRDC/WVC and vegetable division, three lines are Ty gene inserted against BW and RKN). Seedlings of female line were transplanted in 3^rd week of November, 2016 while; male parents were transplanted 10 days ahead of female one. There were 20 plants for each combination transplanted for making crosses. Plant protection, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary as normal crop production. Crossing work was done maintaining half diallel fashion as mentioned by B. Griffing, 1956. Data on plant height, fruit yield per crossings and quantity of seeds were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

F₁crosses having heat tolerant parent (eight crosses) are being trialed this summer season (transplanted in the experimental field on June 12, 2017) for assessing combining ability and heterosis. Winter group will be evaluated in next winter.
