Screening of BARI Released Eggplant Varieties Against Salinity (2017 – 2018)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the research field of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Center, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the rabi season of 2017-18 to screen out salt tolerant eggplant variety (ies). Fifteen eggplant varieties viz.; BARI Begun-1 (BB1), BARI Begun-4 (BB4), BARI Begun-5 (BB5), BARI Begun-6 (BB6), BARI Begun-7 (BB7), BARI Begun-8 (BB8), BARI Begun-9 (BB9), BARI Begun-10 (BB10), BARI Hybrid Begun-2 (BHB2), BARI Hybrid Begun-3 (BHB3), BARI Hybrid Begun-4 (BHB4), BARI Bt Begun-1 (Bt1), BARI Bt Begun-2 (Bt2), BARI Bt Begun-3 (Bt3) and BARI Bt Begun-4 (Bt4) were included in this study. After transplanting into 15-L pots, the plants were exposed to 0 (control), 4 and 8 dS/m salinity stresses and continue up to 30 days. The results revealed that soil salinity reduced plant height, number of leaves/plant, fresh weight of shoot, number of fruits/plant, individual fruit weight and fruit yield/plant in all eggplant varieties. On the other hand, fresh weight of root in most of the eggplant varieties was increased with increasing soil salinity. In control treatment, the highest fruit yield was recorded from Bt4, BB5 and BB6. The varieties BB1, BB8 and BB6 provided maximum fruit yield at 4 dS/m salinity while, BB1, BB2 and BB6 produced the highest yields at 8 dS/m salinity stress. From the current study it can be stated that BB1, BB8 and BB6 were tolerant to 4 dS/m salinity stress, but none of the brinjal varieties found to be tolerant to 8 dS/m salinity stress.

Objectives:

To search out salt tolerant eggplant varieties for bringing the saline affected lands of Bangladesh under vegetable cultivation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Center, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the months of November 2017 to April 2018 following completely randomized design with three replications for screening the salt tolerant eggplant varieties. Seeds of 15 BARI released eggplant varieties (10 OP, 3 hybrids and 4 Bt brinjal) were sown on the seedbed on 11^th November and 30 days old seedlings were transplanted into 15-L pots (one seedlings/pot) containing soil and recommended doses of manures and fertilizers. After establishment, the plants were irrigated with 4 and 8 dS/m saline water at every 3^rd days and continue up to 30 days. Control plants were irrigated with fresh water. Manures and fertilizers were used as recommended by Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. The entire amount of organic manure, TSP, Gypsum, Borax and half of the MP were applied during final pot soil preparation. The remaining half of MP and entire urea were applied in three equal installments, 1^st at 15 days after planting, 2^nd at flowering and the 3^rd at fruit maturity stages. Data were collected on plant height, branch/plant, fresh weight of shoot and root, SPAD value, number of fruit/plant, individual fruit weight and yield/plant. Collected data were statistically analyzed using XLSTAT 2015 software.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on number of fruits/plant, individual fruit weight and yield/plant, BARI Begun-1, BARI Begun-8 and BARI Begun-6 were found to be tolerant at 4 dS/m salinity stress. This work also showed that 8 dS/m saline stress had, to all eggplant varieties, a depressive effect on all parameters of growth and of production studied and none of the varieties found to be tolerant to the applied stress. However; the experiment may be repeated in the following year for more confirmation.
