Response of Summer Eggplant Genotypes to Saline Conditions (2017 – 2018)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The impact of four levels of sodium salt (NaCl) (0.0, 6.0, 8.0 and 10.0 dS/M) on nine summer eggplant genotypes/varieties (BARI Bagun-8, BARI Bagun-10, Line 1x 5, Line 1x9, Line 14 x 5, SMO21, SM048, SM 058 and SM 032) was studied. Growth parameters, chlorophyll content (SPAD value) and efficiency of photo system II (Fv/Fm value) of eggplant genotypes were investigated under salt stress. Results of this study showed a considerable decrease in growth criteria (plant height, number of leaves/plant, leaf area, shoot fresh weight and shoot dry weight with the increase in salinity levels. In conclusion, eggplant genotypes showed variation in their response to salt tolerance and the two genotypes Line 1 x 3, SMO58 and SM021 were found as moderately sensitive to salinity.

Objectives:

To find out salt tolerant summer eggplant varieties.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the glass house of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI (23.9939 N, 90.41133 E) during summer season of 2017 hydroponically (non circulation system). Nine summer genotypes (G₁ = BARI Bagun-8, G₂= BARI Bagun-10, G₃ = Line 1x5, G₄ = line1x9, G₅ = Line 14 x5, G₆ = SM021, G₇ = SM048, G₈ = SMO58 and G₉ = SM232) were used. A specialized plastic pipe system (made of 4 inch PVC pipes) with some holes distributed equidistantly were prepared for growing of the crop hydroponically. Seedlings were raised in seed bed. After 30 days of sowing, seedlings were transferred to hydroponic system (3 leaf stage). The nutrient solution utilized a modified Hoagland’s solution (9 g/l Ca(NO₃)₂; 2.5 g/l K₂SO₄; 4.5 g/l MgSO₄;2 g/l KH₂PO₄; 0.035 g/l H₃BO₃; 0.015 g/l MnSO₄; 0.01 g/l CuSO₄; 0.012 g/l (NH₄)₆Mo₇O₂₄; 0.02 g/l ZnSO₄, 0.3 g/l Fe EDTA), and it was renewed every 3 days. The solution (old solution) used for the plants grown in pipe was changed in every 15 days with fresh ones. The base nutrient solution without added salts served as control in this study. Salt solution treatment application was started when the seedlings had reached at 4-5 true leaf stage on 6 August 2017. Sodium chloride (non-iodinized) was used as salt source. Salt treatments were applied as three different EC values (6, 8, 10 dS/m). Non-salt-treated plants were kept as controls. Salt solution was prepared by dissolving calculated amount of NaCl with tap water. The salinity was measured by EC Meter (Model 6061, Made in Taiwan). The salt solution was applied with an increment of 2.5 dS/m every alternate day till the respective salinity level was attained. At the end of 60 days after salt treatment, salinity stress responses of nine summer eggplant genotypes were evaluated using by some plant vegetative growth parameters such as plant height, leaf number/plant, leaf area, shoot fresh weight, shoot dry weight along with SPAD and Fv/Fm values. Data on SPAD value was taken by SPAD Meter (Model:SPAD-500 Plus, Konica Minolta Inc, Japan). The changes in fluorescence yield reflect changes in photochemical efficiency and heat dissipation. The polyphasic rise of fluorescence transients was measured by an ADC Infrared Gas Analysis plant Efficiency Analyzer (PEA, Handsatech Instruments Ltd., King’s Lynn, UK). The initial fluorescence (F₀), maximum fluorescence (Fm) were analyzed and quantum efficiency of open photosystem II centres-quantum yield (Fv/ Fm) was calculated. The leaf discs were previously adapted to the dark for 20 minutes. The fluorescence data were collected every day at 10.00 am to 12.00 pm from initial to end of the experiment. F_o is the amount of light absorbed initially to raise the fluorescence from a low level to maximum value Fm after dark adaptation. F_v = F_m-F₀which is the variable. Ratio of F_v/F_m is a dark adapted test used to determine maximum quantum yield.

Based on the above results, it can be concluded that two genotypes Line 1 x 5, SM058 and SM021 were found moderately susceptible to salinity. The experiment will be conducted for the next year for the conformation of the result.
