Evaluation of Indian Spinach at Temperature Stress Condition (2017 – 2018)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Indian spinach (Basella alba L., 2n=48; Basella rubra, L., 2n=44) is one of the rapidly growing tropical leafy vegetables usually grown in hot summer season in Bangladesh sensitive to temperature. The experiment was conducted at the Olericulture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during the winter season of 2017-18. Seven genotypes i.e., BA (st) 001, BA (st) 002, BA (st) 003, BA (st) 004, BA (st) 006, BA (st) 007, BARI pui shak 1 were collected from different parts of the country from stress project and were evaluated in a non-replicated trial. Considering the shoot and leaves yielding potentiality and nitrogen scavenging ability the genotypes BA (st) 001 and BA (st) 007 may be selected for advancing and repeat the study by including more genotypes available in the country.

Objectives:

To screen suitable genotypes can be grown in extreme winter for extending the growing season, as the vegetable is thermo sensitive.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Olericulture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during the winter season of 2017-18. Seven genotypes i.e., BA (st) 001, BA (st) 002, BA (st) 003, BA (st) 004, BA (st) 006, BA (st) 007, BARI pui shak 1 were collected from different parts of the country from stress project and were evaluated in a non-replicated trial. The seeds were sown directly to the main field on 5 December 2017 in the hill at the rate of 3-4 seeds per hill. The unit plot size was 2.0 x 1.0 m and the plants were spaced at 30 x 20 cm. Fertilizers were applied as per FRG 2012 of BARC. Half of the quantity of cowdung was applied during final land preparation. The remaining cowdung, entire quantity of TSP, ZnO, Gypsum and one third each of urea and MP were applied during pit preparation. The rest of Urea and MP were applied in two equal splits, 10 and 20 days after germination in the main field. Temperature of air and soil were recorded every day early in the morning. Data were taken on number of shoots per plant, shoot length, shoot diameter, leaf size and SPAD. Two harvests were made and data were average and analyzed statistically with R-Package.
