The pot experiment was conducted at the Plant Physiology Section of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2017-18 to find out the salt tolerant genotypes of sweet gourd at vegetative stage. Twelve sweet gourd genotypes (P1=1-1-1-6-4-2-6-2, P2=31-2-4-12-3-7-5-7, P3=75-2-1-5-3-6-3(B), P4=BARI Hybrid Mistikumra-1, P5=75-2-4-5-3-4-8, P6=71-9(B)-1-1-2-2-5, P7=75-2-1-5-3-7, P8=71-9-6-9-10-3-9, P9=5-4-12-6-3-9-3-3, P10=BARI Mistikumra-1, P11=75-2-1-5-3-4-12(A) and P12= BARI Mistikumra-2)  were tested against varying levels of salinity viz. 0, 2, 4, 8 and 12 dS/m in pot at the vegetative stage.  Tap water (0 dS/m) was used as a control. The genotypes showed significant variation with regard to vegetative growth (vine length and leaf/plant) and chlorophyll content and dry mater (TDM) production at both saline and non-saline conditions. At 4 and 8 dS/m, the genotype P9 and P10 produced maximum vine length, number of leaves/plant. These two genotypes also gave higher amount of leaf chlorophyll content at 4 and 8 ds/m. The genotypes P9 and P10 (BARI Mistikumra-1) produced the highest TDM both at 4 and 8 dS/m.

To find out the salt-tolerant sweet gourd genotypes at vegetative stage.

The experiment was conducted at the field of Plant Physiology Section, Horticulture Research Center, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) (23.99487, 90.41147) during October 2017 to January 2018. Twelve genotypes of sweet gourd (P1=1-1-1-6-4-2-6-2, P2=31-2-4-12-3-7-5-7, P3=75-2-1-5-3-6-3(B), P4=BARI Hybrid Mistikumra-1, P5=75-2-4-5-3-4-8, P6=71-9(B)-1-1-2-2-5, P7=75-2-1-5-3-7,  P8=71-9-6-9-10-3-9,  P9=5-4-12-6-3-9-3-3,  P10=BARI Mistikumra-1, P11=75-2-1-5-3-4-12 (A) and P12= BARI Mistikumra-2) collected from Olericulture Division of HRC, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur were used in this study. BARI Mistikumra-1 was screened out as salt tolerant from 45 sweet gourd genotypes for the last two years. This variety performed better at 8 dS/m during germination and early seedling growth stage. The experiment assessed the seedling growth of sweet gourd genotypes at different NaCl salinity levels. The NaCl concentrations used were 0 (control), 4, 8 and 12 dS/m. The salinity was measured by soil EC Meter (HI 9833, direct soil conductivity & temperature meter, HANNA instruments) and EC Meter (Model 6061, Made in Taiwan). The trial was non-replicated. Sweet gourd was grown in plastic pot (length 25 cm, dia 25 cm at the top and 12.5 cm at the bottom; capacity 10 L), which contained around 10 kg soil collected from Kodda, Kaliakoir, Upazilla, Gazipur district. Fertilizers were applied to each pot @ Urea 50 g, TSP 25 g, MoP 25 g, Gypsum 30g and Boric Acid (medicated) 2.0 g during pot filling mixing with air dried soil (7.5% moisture). Application of insecticide (Diazinon @ 1.5 ml/litre of water) and weeding were done as per requirements. In each pot, 5 seeds were sown on 25 October 2017. The seedlings were emerged within 7-8 days after sowing. The experiment ended in 5 January 2018. The pots used during the present study had five small holes at the bottom. At the bottom of the pot, some pieces of broken bricks were kept and the brick pieces were covered with a small piece of mosquito net. Thinning of seedling was done at 15 days after sowing by keeping three plants in each pot. Salinity treatment was imposed at 4 leaf stages. Salt solution was prepared by dissolving calculated amount of commercially available NaCl with tap water. Soil salinity was measured by soil EC meter (HI 9833, direct soil conductivity & temperature meter, Hanna instruments and EC meter (Model, 6061, Taiwan). The salt solution was applied with an increment of 2.5 dS m-1 every alternate day till the respective salinity level was attained. Treatment solution was applied in excess so that the extra solution dripped from the bottom of the pots. The root and shoot sample were collected prior to harvest. The collected sample was oven dried at 72 0C, for 72 hours. For root sampling, plastic pots were soaked in water, soil was washed with water and the roots were recovered by passing the soil water suspension through a 2mm mesh sieve. Data on CCI (Chlorophyll Content Index) was measured by Chlorophyll Content Meter (CCM-200 Opti sciences USA).

The study revealed that P9 (5-4-12-6-3-9-3-3-1) and P10 (BARI Mistikumra-1) were found better than other genotypes at salinity levels up to 12 dS/m at vegetative stage with regard to vegetative growth, chlorophyll content index, root and shoot dry weight and total dry weight/plant. The experiment should be continued for the next year.
