A study was conducted in the vegetable research field of Olericulture division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during winter season 2016-17. The axillary/lateral shoots (10-12 cm long) were taken from BARI Hybrid Tomato-5. The cuttings were dipped for 5 minutes in 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 ppm solutions of Indole Butyric Acid (IBA), and control (Water) and statistically compared. The effect of the treatment was compared planted in polybag filled with a mixture of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM) and soil (1:1) and observed one month. All the treatments were triplicated using a randomized complete block design. The results showed that treatment with 200 ppm of 1BA was found higher survival % of shoot cuttings (100%), no of roots per cutting (73), longer root length (17.43cm) followed by IBA 150 ppm more effective in enhancing the rooting effect and root length of tomato cutting compared 100 ppm and even 250 ppm and 300 ppm concentration of 1BA and control (0 ppm IBA). So, 200 ppm IBA may think to be the best treatment that will produce more roots as well as better side shoot seedlings

To explore a suitable technique for root development in tomato cuttings, minimizing the cost incurred on the purchase of hybrid seeds each time for a new crop, and test the efficacy of IBA in the rooting of tomato side shoot cutting. 

Shoot production field: The experiment was conducted at the vegetable research field of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre (HRC), BARI, Gazipur during 2016-17. BARI Hybrid Tomato 5 was used for this study as the main crop as well as side shoot production field. Twenty-six days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field with a spacing of 60 cm x 40 cm represented a double row having 15 plants per row accommodate 30 plants per plot. Ten plots were accommodated in the main crop field. The unit plot was separated by a 50 cm irrigation drain, while blocks were separated by a 60 cm drain.

Side shoots collection: After 66 days of sowing 10-12 cm long side shoots were collected from the main plant. The samples were brought to the laboratory in moistened polythene bags and standard cutting was prepared using a sterile knife. The different cuttings were left in a moistened polythene bag until treatment. Indole acetic acid powders were dissolved in 50% ethanol as described by Kutama et al. (2008) and then made the desire strength solution of IBA. After pick the lower leaves off the bottom of the cuttings were dipped in respective solution for 5 minutes (100, 150, 200, 250, 300 ppm of Indole Butyric Acid (IBA), and control (0 ppm IBA only water) and planted in the polybag filled with cowdund + soil (1:1) the cut end pointing downward. After 27 days of cutting placement, necessary samples were collected as destructive material. All treatments were replicated thrice following randomized complete block design (RCBD). Each experimental unit contained 10 shoot cuttings (10 pots). Data were collected on survival % of shoot cuttings, No of roots per cutting, longer root length (cm). Shoot fresh and dry weight. Root fresh and dry weight. Collected data were subjected to the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and means were separated according to the least significant difference (LSD) at 0.05 level of probability with MSTAT-C software.

Treatment with 250 ppm of 1BA was found more effective in enhancing the rooting effect and shoot and root fresh and dry weight of tomato cutting compared to 100 ppm, and control. But survival % was not as much as that of 150 ppm and 200 ppm of 1BA treated cutting. Considering all parameters 200 ppm IBA may think to be the best treatment that will produce more roots as well as better side shoot seedlings compared with having a higher and lower concentration of IBA including control.
