A study on the performance of BARI released tomato varieties in the northern region during late winter was carried out at ARS, Thakurgaon during the late winter1 2017 cropping season in order to compare the performance of BARI released tomato varieties and farmers’ collected hybrid tomato lines at the northern region of Bangladesh. Eight tomato varieties/lines were included for comparison. The varieties/lines were: BARI Tomato 14, BARI Tomato 15, BARI Tomato 16, BARI Tomato 17, NS 501, NS 538, Tomato 1389 and Bipul plus in an RCB design with three replications. The study revealed that a number of fruit in 2nd cluster (4.07), was higher in hybrid tomato line NS 501followed by hybrid Tomato 1389, BARI tomato 14 and BARI tomato 15. A number of fruit per plot also higher in NS 501(133), Bipul plus (120.67) and BARI tomato 15 (114.33).  Fruit yield was recorded the highest in Bipul plus (27.68 t/ha), BARI Tomato 16 (27.00 t/ha), BARI Tomato 15 (26.25 t/ha), and NS 501 (25.74 t/ha). From the study, it is also clear that BARI Tomato 15, BARI Tomato 16 were higher yielder (26.25 to 27.00 t/ha) during late winter which is superior to the rest of the tested tomato varieties/lines and comparable with Tomato 1389 (23.88 t/ha) followed by NS 538 (19.98 t/ha) which are the most preferred and so-called hybrid tomato lines cultivated mostly by the farmers of the northern region of Bangladesh.

To determine the performance of BARI released tomato varieties along with the so-called hybrids tomatoes and to compare their performance in the northern region of Bangladesh during late winter.

The study was carried out at ARS, Thakurgaon during the late winter 2017 cropping season, in order to compare the performance of BARI released tomato varieties and farmers, collected tomato lines in the northern region of Bangladesh. Eight tomato varieties/lines were included for comparison. The varieties/lines were: BARI Tomato 14, BARI Tomato 15, BARI Tomato 16, BARI Tomato 17, NS 501, NS 538, Tomato 1389 and Bipul plus. The experiment was laid out in an RCB design with three replications. Seeds of those tomato varieties were sown in mid-January and the seedlings were transplanted in mid-February 2017. The unit plot size was 3.2mx1m. Plant spacing was maintained 60 cmx40 cm and with this relation, there were 16 plants in each replication. The whole experimental plot was manures and fertilized at the rate of cow-dung 10 ton, urea 550kg, TSP 450kg, MoP 250kg, gypsum 121kg, boric acid 12kg and zinc sulphate 15kg per hectare. Half of cow-dung, the entire amount of TSP, boric acid, gypsum, and 1/3 of MoP was applied during final land preparation. The remaining ½ of cow-dung was applied in the pit. The whole amount of urea and the rest 2/3 of MoP were applied in 3 equal splits at 20, 40 and 60 days after transplanting. All necessary plant protection measures were taken by spraying Malathion and Diethene M-45. Necessary support was provided for protecting the plant from lodging. Harvestable fruits were harvested at a weekly interval. Data were taken on days to 50% flowering, days required for 1st harvest, number of fruits per plant, disease and insect reactions, number of locule per fruit, fruit size, individual fruit weight and yield of tomato. Data on whitefly and leaf miner were recorded from five middle leaves by visual count from each plant and 10 plants from each replication. Fruit borer infestation was recorded during harvest at a weekly interval. On the other hand, data on BW and TLCV was recorded at the last harvest. Data were analyzed statistically and furnished in the tables.

From the above findings it could be summarized that BARI Tomato 15, BARI Tomato 16  is out yielded (26-27 t/ha) which is comparable with the tested tomato varieties/lines to Bipul plus, NS 501 and Tomato 1389 (23.88 t/ha). So, BARI Tomato 15 BARI Tomato 16 may be the most preferred and so-called hybrid tomato lines cultivated mostly by the farmers of the northern region of Bangladesh during late winter.
