A study was conducted at the research field of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2017-18 to estimate the effective doses of magnesium (Mg) for yield maximization of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum, L.).There were 4 treatments viz. T1 = Control, T2 = Mg 4.0 kg ha-1, T3= Mg 8.0 kg ha-1, T4= Mg 12 kg ha-1 along with the blanket dose of N140P45K90S18Zn4B2 kg ha-1 and cow dung 5 t ha-1.  The experiment was designed randomized complete block with three replications. The results showed that the marketable yields of tomato ranged from 43.6 to 66.5 t ha-1. The highest tomato yield was obtained from the treatment T4. The lowest yield was found in control plot. The T4 treatment exhibited the highest Mg uptake by tomato. The highest net return (Tk.665000 ha-1) was counted from T4 treatment followed by T3. The highest benefit cost ratio (8.29) was also counted from the treatment T4followed by (7.98) T3 treatment. The lowest net return and benefit cost ratio was calculated from control treatment (T1). Considering the yield and benefit cost ratio 8 kg Mg ha-1 or 12 kg Mg ha-1may be used for tomato production.

To find out the suitable dose Mg fertilization for yield maximization of tomato.

The experiment was carried out during the 2017-18 in Rabi seasons at the experimental field of HRC, BARI to evaluate the effectiveness of different levels of magnesium on growth, fruit yield and quality of tomato. The variety of tomato was BARI Tomato-15.There were 4 treatments viz. T1 = Control, T2 = Mg 4 kg ha-1, T3= Mg 8 kg ha-1, T4= Mg12 kg ha-1 along with the blanket dose of N140P45K90S18Zn4B2 kg ha-1and cow dung 5 t ha-1. Initial soil samples of experimental field were collected from 0-15 cm depth and chemical properties were determined through standard methods. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 3 m × 2.5 m and the spacing was 60cm× 40 cm. The blanket doses of fertilizers were applied as urea, TSP,MoP, gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid. The decomposed cow dung, TSP, ½ of MoP, gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid was applied after final land preparation. The Mg was applied treatment wise as magnesium sulphate after bed preparation. Urea and ½ of MoP was applied in two equal splits. First and second splits were applied after third and fifth weeks of transplanting of tomato seedling (seedling age 30 days). Tomato seedlings were transplanted with the spacing of row to row of 60 cm and plant to plant of 40 cmon21 November 2017. Weeding was done in two times-1st 30 DAT and 2nd 60 DAT. Three sprays were given with fungicide starting from 40 DAT and two time’s insecticides (Karate and Ripcord @ 2 ml L-1 of water) both at 15days interval starting from 40 DAT for controlling insects and diseases. Data on growth and yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants for each treatment. The yields of tomato were expressed as plot basis. The fruits were harvested weekly and total yield of weekly calculated as kg per plant and plot, respectively. Fresh tomato samples were collected from each experimental plot and brought to the Plant Molecular Laboratory of Postharvest Technology Division, Horticulture Research Centre at BARI and preserved the samples frozen at -30°C. Tomato fruit samples were removed from the freezer to determining total soluble solid (TSS), pH, titratable acidity (%) and vitamin-C. Each sample fruit was sliced in half from stem end to calyx end. The slices were squeezed to make a juice mix. The TSS was measured by placing about 0.4 ml of juice mixture on the prism surface of a hand refractometer (Atago N-1E, Brix 0-32%, Japan). The prism surface of the refractometer was rinsed with distilled water. The pH of the juice was determined with digitalpH meter (CH-8603, Metter-Toledo GbH, Schwerzenbach, Switzerland). Titratable acid contents as determined by diluting each 2 mL aliquot of juice to 10 mL with 8 mL of distilled water and 2 drops of phenolphthalein added and pHadjusted to 8.2 using 0.1 N (w/v) NaOH. Data on yield, quality and yield contributing characters of tomato were subjected to statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA) according to Statistix 10 software. When significant differences occurred, the means were separated using least significant difference test (LSD, P ≤ 0.05).In this study BCR was calculated for a hectare of land. Treatment wise management cost was calculated by adding the cost incurred for labours, plowing and inputs for each treatment. The fruit yield was converted t ha-1. This yield was utilized to calculate the gross return. The shadow prices (land rent, stover cost etc) were not considered. The gross return was measured by multiplying the marketable fruit yield by the unit price (farmgate) of tomato at that time. Net return was calculated by subtracting management cost from gross return.

From above discussion it is clear that the yield, quality, nutrient content and yield contributing characters of tomato showed best performance in the rate of 12 kg Mg ha-1followed by 8 kg Mg ha-1. The physiological efficiency demonstrated highest in T2 followed by T3 and T4 treatment. The quadratic response function, the economic dose of Mg was calculated of11.7 kg ha-1. Net return and benefit cost ratio showed highest in the plot receiving of 12 kg Mg ha-1followed by the plot receiving of 8 kg Mg ha-1.Considering the yield and benefit cost ratio 8 kg Mg ha-1 or 12 kg Mg ha-1may be used for tomato production. The trial will be continued in next year.
