Effect of Simple Net Houses on Year-round Vegetable Production. Season: 2016-2017

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Performances of four vegetable crops were observed under different net houses at the Olericulture farm of Horticulture Research Center (HRC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur during the season of 2016-17. Tunnel covered with the net from top to bottom and tunnel covered with the net from top to bottom with polythene cover at the top were considered two types of net houses compared with open field cultivation as control. Therefore there were three treatments that were replicated three times following randomized complete block design. Microclimate data showed that netting affected environmental variables. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) reduced in the net houses, on the other hand, temperature and humidity increased marginally compared to open fields. Growth and yield of tomato, capsicum, cucumber, and spinach were observed under the treatments. Results indicated that tomato and spinach yielded lower (2.15 and 2.08 kg/plant, respectively) in net house cultivation compared to open field cultivation (3.14 kg/plant). But capsicum and cucumber performed better in respect of yield and yield contributing characters under the net house.

Objectives:

To grow vegetable year round under net house to meet the growing demand of the vegetables.

Methodology:

The study was carried out at the Olericulture farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur in winter 2016-17. Tomato (BARI Tomato 15), Capsicum (BARI Mistimorich 1), Cucumber (CS 006) and Spinach (BARI Palonghsak 1) Crops were used in this study. BARI Tomato 15, BARI Mistimorich 1 and cucumber (CS006) seedlings were grown in the seedbed and transplanted on the first week of November under different treatment. BARI Spinach 1 seeds were sown in the plot in line. The experiment consisted of three treatments which were replicated three times following Randomized Complete Block Design. The treatment combinations were i) T₁ = Tunnel covered with the net from top to bottom without polythene cover at the top ii) T₂ = Tunnel covered with the net from top to bottom with polythene cover at the top iii) T₃ = Open cultivation (Control). A sixty mesh net was used for netting. The tunnels were 2.3 meters wide having two 1.0 meter wide beds with 30 cm drain in between, which served as an irrigation channel. Each plot was 1.0 m wide and 3.0 m long. Plants were spaced and fertilized as per BARI recommendation. Data were collected on different growth and yield parameters. Collected data were analyzed statistically by using MSTAT-C to find out the variation among different treatments. Treatment means that were significantly different were separated using Least Significant Difference (LSD) test.

Achievement/Findings:

Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) reduced in the net houses while temperature and humidity increased marginally compared to open fields. The yield of tomato and spinach decreased in net house cultivation on the other hand yield of capsicum and cucumber was increased compared to open field cultivation. Further investigation is needed to confirm the results of the present study.
