The morphological variations of bata, Labeo bata(Hamilton, 1822) was studied based on morphometric and landmark analysis to know the population's status in northern and southwestern Bangladesh. Samples were collected from six river sources viz. Mathabhanga (MR); Kirtonkhola, Barisal (KR); Nabaganga,Jhenidah (NR); Padma (PdR); Jamuna (JR) and Punorvoba, Dinajpur (PR). Univariate statistics among 22 truss measurements and 15 morphometric characters revealed a significant inter stock variation (P<0.05, P<0.01, P<0.001) among all the samples. The first, second, third, fourth and fifth discrimination function (DF) accounted for 78.5, 9.6, 7.9, 0.0 and 4% respectively in group variability, conferring 100% of total along with group variability. Two clusters were formed in Euclideandendrogram, in which 1st cluster formed by the Kirtonkhola river population and 2nd cluster formed by the remaining population along with the five sub-clusters (MR, NR, PdR, JR and PR). These analyses supported that the ‘truss network’ is an effective tool for determining the population status and baseline information of L. bata.

The present study deals with morphometric variations of bata from six rivers of Bangladesh using a truss network system.

Sample collection: A total of 171 individuals of L.bata were collected from six different river sources viz. Kirtonkhola, Barisal (KR); Mathavanga, Chuadanga (MR); Nabaganga, Jhenidah (NR), Punorvoba, Dinajpur (PR); Jamuna, Tangail (JR) and Padma, Rajshahi (PdR) using commercial fishing seine nets during March 2013 to July 2014. The samples were transported in live condition using oxygenated polythene bags. The fish specimens were 13.1-19.9 cm in total length (TL). Measurement of morphometric traits: Sixteen morphometric characters and body weights were measured following the conventional method described by Hubbs & Lagler (1958) with slight modification to the nearest 0.1cm using a slide caliper. measurement of landmark distances: For measurement of landmark distances of the species, the truss network system (Hossain et al. 2010) was used to construct a network on fish body, 10 landmarks determining 22 distances were produced and measured as illustrated in. Data points were arranged in “trusses” around the fish, a layout that maximizes the number of measurements and increases the sensitivity of the analysis (Strauss & Bookstein 1982). Fish were laid out on a piece of graph paper on a wax-coated tray and fixed into position by the insertion of pins along the body. This enabled accurate and consistent measurements. Each landmark point was detected with colored pointers. Finally, each landmark point was obtained from the distances on the graph paper which were measured using vernier calipers by a single person for avoiding biases. Statistical analysis: A multivariate discriminant analysis was used for morphometric data to identify the combination of variables that best separate L. bata species. Before the analysis, the effects of the size of the dataset were eliminated. The variations were attributed to differences in body shape, not the relative size of the fish. In the present study, there were significant linear correlations between all the measured characteristics and the total length of the fish. Therefore, it was necessary to remove size-dependent variation for all characters. To eliminate the variation resulting from morphometric characters, at first they were standardized according to Elliott et al. (1995).

The findings of the study are constructive as basic information of L. bata populations for further studies as management practices, further breeding, mass seed production, ex-situ conservation and aquaculture practices as well. It is indispensable to select genetically superior stocks with better features along with morphometric investigations. Moreover, this research could be allowed to persuade future implications and protect them from being endangered and as well as conservation aspects.
