Preliminary Yield Trial of Lentil 2017 - 2018

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out to determine the performance of ten lentil genotypes for yield and yield contributing characters at two different locations viz. Ishurdi and Jashore during Rabi, 2017-18. Significant variations were observed for days to flower, days to maturity, pods plant^-1, 100 seed weight and yield in kg hectare^-1. Among the genotypes, BLX 11014-8was flowered earlier and also showed earlier maturity. Maximum seed weight was observed in BLX 11018-6 from the mean values of two locations. Considering different desirable characters, BLX 11014-10, BLX 11014-11, BLX 11004-8 and BLX 11014-8 were selected to evaluate during next season under RYT trial.

Objectives:

With an emphasis on resistance to rust and stemphylium blight diseases, suitable for inter or mixed cropping are the key research objectives of the varietal improvement program. After evaluation of genotypes in a suitable location it is necessary to evaluate them in the preliminary yield trial (PYT) in multiple location(s) to assess their performance across locations.

Methodology:

The experiment consisted of ten entries including BARI Masur-6 and BARI Masur-7 as check.The trial was conducted in a RCB design with 3 replications. The genotypes were BLX 11004-8, BLX 11011-7, BLX 11014-8, BLX 11014-10, BLX 11014-11, BLX 11015-3, BLX 11018-4 and BLX 11018-6. It was conducted at three locations, Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, RARS Jashore, and PRSS, Gazipur during Rabi 2017-18 (16 to 23 November) in a RCB design with 3 replications. But due to implement weather condition, trial of Gazipur becomes damaged. So, results from other two are combined here. Each entry was sown in unit plot of 8 rows × 4 m long with a spacing of 40 cm between rows. Spacing between two plots were 40 cm. Seeds were sown in the rows carefully by hands at 3 cm depth and covered by soils. Post sowing irrigation was given to ensure seed germination. Mulching was done and crusts were broken. Weeding was done to keep the plots free from weeds. Each of the entries were observed seedling to harvest and compared with checks. Grain yield was calculated from the whole plot. Yield contributing characters were taken from the 10 randomly selected plants from the middle rows of each plot. Data were analyzed statistically by using PLABSTAT program.

Achievement/Findings:

Significant variation was observed among the genotypes regarding days to flower, days to maturity, pods per plant, 100 seed weight and yield in kg ha^-1. In case of flowering and maturity among the two locations, genotypes performed a bit earlier at Ishurdi. Among the genotypes, BLX11014-8 was flowered earlier and also showed earlier maturity along with BLX 11004-8, BLX 11014-10 and BLX 11015-3. Among the test entries, BLX 11018-6 was the most dwarf one. The entries, BLX 11014-8 and BLX 11014-10 showed the highest numbers of pods/plant. Apart from these, maximum seed weight was observed in BLX11018-6 from the mean values of two locations. In the case of yield performance over locations, BLX 11014-10 performed best among the genotypes followed by BLX 11014-11. Besides those, entries viz. BLX 11004-8 and BLX 11014-8 performed better comparing with checks. Considering different desirable characters four entries, BLX 11014-10, BLX 11014-11, BLX 11004-8 and BLX 11014-8 were selected to evaluate at next RYT trial.
