Regional Yield Trial of Lentil (set-i)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted consisting of five lentil genotypes including two check varieties viz; BARI Masur-6 and BARI Masur-7 for evaluation of yield and yield contributing characters and also yield stability at four different locations viz. Ishurdi, Gazipur and Jashore during Rabi, 2017-18. Significant variations were observed for days to flower, days to maturity, pods plant^-1,100 seed weight and yield in kg ha^-1. Among the genotypes, BLX 10002-20 was flowered earlier followed by BLX 10002-15 and also showed earlier maturity. In case of yield performance over locations, none of the tested entries performed better comparing with checks.

Objectives:

As a step of breeding work, after evaluation of genotypes in PYT, it is necessary to evaluate them in the regional yield trial (RYT) in multiple location(s) to assess their stability performance.

Methodology:

The trial consisted of five entries including BARI Masur-6 and BARI Masur-7 as check varieties. It was conducted at three locations, Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, RARS Jashore, and PRSS, Gazipur during Rabi 2017-18 in a RCB design with 3 replications. Each entry was sown in unit plot of 10 rows × 4 m long with a spacing of 40 cm between rows. Spacing between two plots were 80 cm.Seeds were sown in the rows carefully by hands at 3 cm depth and covered by soils. Post sowing irrigation was given to ensure seed germination. Mulching was done and crusts were broken. Weeding was done to keep the plots free from weeds. Each of the entries were observed seedling to harvest and compared with checks. Grain yield was calculated from the whole plot. Yield contributing characters were taken from 10 randomly selected plants from the middle rows of each plot. Data were analyzed statistically by using PLABSTAT and R-program.

Significant variations were observed among the genotypes regarding days to flower, days to maturity, pods plant^-1, 100 seed weight and yield in kg ha^-1 (Table 1.10). In case of flowering and maturity among the three locations, genotypes performed a bit earlier at Joydebpur. Among the genotypes, BLX 10002-20 was flowered earlier followed by BLX 10002-15 and also showed earlier maturity. Among the test entries, BLX 10002-20 was most dwarf one. The varieties, BARI masur-6 and BARI masur-7 showed maximum numbers of podsplant^-1 followed by BLX 10001-1. Apart from these, maximum hundred seed weight (2.87g) was observed in BLX 10001-1 from the mean performance of two locations. In case of yield performance over locations, none of the tested entries performed better comparing with checks. GGE biplot analysis was done to find out stable genotypes among locations. GGE biplot is exploited for graphical display of G×E pattern of yield trial data with several advantages. The yield of each genotypes in a tested environment is a result of the genotypic main effect (G), environmental main effect (E) and genotype × environment (GE) interaction (Yan and Kang, 2002). In this experiment, the first two PCs of the GGE model explained 100% of variation in G+GE. Five genotypes represent a polygon and the genotypes corner of the polygon most responsive genotypes (Fig.1). The genotype BLX 10001-1showed most interaction with the environment followed by BLX 10002-20. All the entries distributed into four sectors. Among the tested locations, Jashore and Ishurdi had larger environmental vectors indicating high discriminating ability. Considering biplot analysis and yield data, genotypes BLX 10002-15, BARI Masur-6 and BARI Masur-7 showed stable performance across the locations. Among the locations, Jashore and Ishurdi respectively showed high potentiality having better yield comparing to Joydebpur. Considering different desirable characters and stability parameters, two entries viz .BLX 10002-15 and BLX 10002-20 were selected to evaluate during next season at PVS trial
