Regional Yield Trial of Lentil (set-ii)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out to determine the performance of nine genotypes for yield and yield contributing characters and stability that were evaluated in four different locations viz. Ishurdi, Jamalpur, Rahmatpur and Jashore during Rabi, 2017-18. Significant variation was observed for days to flower, days to maturity, pods per plant, 100 seed weight and yield in kg per hectare. Among the genotypes, LRIL 21-198 was flowered earlier followed by BLX 05002-3 and also showed earlier maturity along with BLX 05009-7, LRIL 18-102 and LRIL 22-158.Considering different desirable characters and stability parameters, BLX 05002-3, LRIL 18-102 and BLX 05002-6 were selected to evaluate at next PVS trial.

Objectives:

. As a step of breeding work, after evaluation of genotypes in PYT, it is necessary to evaluate them in the different regions or multiple location(s) to assess their stability of performance over locations.

Methodology:

The experiment consisted of nine entries including BARI Masur-6 and BARI Masur-7 as check. It was conducted at four locations, Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, RARS Jashore, Rahmatpur, Barishal and PRSS, Gazipur during Rabi 2017-18 in a RCB design with 3 replications. Each entry was sown in unit plot of 8 rows 4 m long with a spacing of 40 cm between rows. The spacing between the two plots was 40 cm. Seeds were sown in the rows carefully by hands at 3 cm depth and covered by soils. Post sowing irrigation was given to ensure seed germination. Mulching was done and crusts were broken. Weeding was done to keep the plots free from weeds. Each of the entries was observed seedling to harvest and compared with checks. Grain yield was calculated from the plot. Yield contributing characters were taken from the 10 randomly selected plants from the middle rows of each plot. Data were analyzed statistically by using MSTAT-C and R-program.

Significant variations were revealed among the genotypes regarding days to flower, days to maturity, podsplant^-1, 100 seed weight and yield in kg ha^-1 (Table 1.11). In case of flowering and maturity among the four locations, genotypes performed a bit earlier at Rahmatpur, Barishal followed by Jamalpur. Among the genotypes, LRIL 21-198 was flowered earlier followed by BLX 05002-3 and also showed earlier maturity along with BLX 05009-7, LRIL 18-102 and LRIL 22-158. Among the test entries, BLX 05009-7 was the most dwarf one followed by LRIL 21-198. The entries, BLX 05002-6 showed maximum numbers of pods plant^-1. Apart from these, maximum hundred seed weight (2.63 g) was observed in LRIL 21-198 and minimum from LG 198 from the mean values of two locations. In the case of yield performance over locations, BLX 05002-6 performed best (1940 kg ha^-1) among the genotypes followed by LRIL 18-102 comparing with two checks. Among the locations, Ishurdi and Jashore showed high potentiality having better yield comparing to Jamalpur and Rahmatpur, Barishal. GGE biplot analysis was done to find out stable genotypes among locations. GGE biplot is exploited for the graphical display of G×E pattern of yield trial data with several advantages. The yield of each genotype in a tested environment is a result of the genotypic main effect (G), environmental main effect (E) and genotype × environment (GE) interaction (Yan and Kang, 2002). In this experiment, the first two PCs of the GGE model explained 90% of variation in G+GE. Nine genotypes represent a polygon and the genotypes corner of the polygon most responsive genotypes (Fig. 2). The genotype BLX 05009-7 showed the most interaction with the environment followed by LG-198, LRIL 21-198 and BARI masur-7. All the entries distributed into four sectors. Among the tested locations, Jashore and Ishurdi had larger environmental vectors indicating high discriminating ability. Considering biplot analysis and yield data genotype BARI masur-6, LRIL 18-102, BLX 05002-3and LRIL 22-158, showed stable performance across the locations. GGE biplot of yield showed entry BLX 05002-3 and BLX 05002-6 was a more stable genotype for Jashore and Ishurdi locations.

Considering different desirable characters and stability parameters, three entries viz .X 05002-3, LRIL 18-102 and BLX 05002-6were selected to evaluate at the next PVS trial.
