Study on the Relationship of Weather Factors in Disease Development in Onion

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at RARS, Jashore during Rabi season 2018-2019 to evaluate the weather factors such as air temperature and soil moisture against Purple blotch disease development in two onion varieties BARI Peaj 2 and BARI Peaj 5. The highest disease score (5) was recorded from both onion varieties transplanted in mid November along with the highest yield (from 30.68 to 39.78 ton/ha). On the other hand onion varieties transplanted at mid February recorded the lowest disease score (0) and yield (7.90 to 9.65 ton/ha).

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of weather factor on development of purple blotch disease incidence during onion cultivation in Jashore region.

Methodology:

Two varieties of onion such as BARI Peaj 2 and BARI Peaj 3 were evaluated for disease development during winter 2019-20. There were three specific planting date such as 17^th November 2019, 13^th January 2020 and 13^th February 2020. The plot size was 2 m X 2 m and there were three replication for each planting date. Fertilizer, irrigation and intercultural operation were conducted following standard method of SRC, BARI. The disease development data was recorded from the first appearance of disease spot and according to 0-5 scale (Sharma, 1986 and Ravichandran, 2014); where 0: No disease symptom, 1: A few spots towards tip covering 10 per cent leaf area, 2: Several purplish brown patches covering up to 20 per cent of leaf area, 3: Several patches with paler outer zone covering up to 40 per cent leaf area, 4: Leaf streaks covering up to 75 per cent leaf area or breaking of leaves from center and 5: Complete drying of the leaves or breaking of leaves from center. The disease data were recorded for six consecutive days approximately 7 days interval. Soil moisture of each treatment plot was recorded with the help of a Digital Moisture Metre (Made in China). For each plot three moisture data were taken. The mean soil moisture was calculated and expressed as percentage of Relative humidity. Daily maximum and minimum temperature were collected from Bangladesh Air Force, Jashore Cantonment. The average temperature was calculated and expressed as ⁰C. The yield data was recorded as kg/4 m² and converted as ton/hectare (1 Kg/ square metre = 11.023 US ton/ha). All data were analyzed through IBM SPSS Statistics Version 24 software.
