Yield Loss Assessment of Lentil Due to Stemphylium Blight Disease

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The field experiment was conducted during rabi season 2019-20 at the research field of Plant Pathology Division, BARI, Gazipur. Yield loss in lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) due to stemphylium blight (Stemphylium botryosum) was determined by assessing yield and disease parameters. There were two treatments, un-sprayed and sprayed which were replicated ten times following pair plot technique design. In the sprayed plots a fungicide Rovral (Iprodion) was sprayed continuously upto 100 days after sowing at an interval of 7 days starting from 50 days after sowing. Average Stemphylium blight disease score in sprayed and un-sprayed plots was recorded 1.0 and 2.3 respectively. Average 2265.00 kg/ha yield was obtained from sprayed plots and 1791.67 kg/ha yield was obtained from un-sprayed plots. Mean yield loss of 19.78% was estimated due to stemphylium blight disease in lentil.

Objectives:

Considering the importance of the yield loss assessment due to disease the present experiment has been designed

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted during rabi season 2019-20 at the research field of Plant Pathology Division, BARI, Gazipur and RARS, Ishurdi, Pabna. Lentil variety BARI Masur-1 was sown in paired plot with 10 replications. Seeds were sown on 12December 2019 in 3 x 2m plot allowing a row to row space of 30cm and plant to plant 10cm. In each pair one plot was sprayed with a fungicide Rovral (Iprodion) continuously up to 100 days after sowing starting from 50 days after sowing at an interval of 7 days. Stemphylium infected plant debris which was collected from last years’ infected field was spread over the field to boost up the inoculum pressure. Before spreading the plant debris, inoculum level and viability of spores was tested. Other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Disease data was recorded following 5 point scoring scale described by Bakr and Ahmed (1992) where, 0 = no infection (HR), 1 = a few scattered leaf infections but no twig blighted (R), 2 = 5-10% leaflet infection and/or few scattered twigs blighted (MR), 3 = 11-20% Leaflet infected and/or 1-5% twigs blighted (MS), 4 = 21-50% leaflet infected and/or 6-10% twigs blighted, and 5 = above 51% leaflet infected and/or more than 10% twigs blighted (HS). The statistical analysis of the recorded data was done by pared t-Test: two-sample assuming equal variance which is also known as Fisher t-Test.

From this study it can be concluded that about 20% yield loss occurred due to Stemphylium blight disease in lentil this year. This is third year result and the loss due to Stemphylium blight disease in this year is very close to previous years. For further confirmation, this experiment will be repeated next year in several locations
