Screening of Mustard Lines/varities Against Alternaria Blight or Leaf Spot Disease

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted in the field of RARS, Jamalpur during 2019-2020 to screen out the resistant cultivars of mustard against alternaria blight or leaf spot disease. Fifty five germplasm and lines were used as treatments. Among the germplasm 1 entry was found highly resistant to alternaria blight having incidence less than 5%. Nineteen germplasm showing incidence percentage ranging from 5 to 25 were resistant to alternaria blight.

Objectives:

The present research work has been carried out to screen genotypes of mustard for resistance against A. brassicae /A. brassicicola under natural field condition in RARS, Jamalpur.

Methodology:

The present paper reports on the susceptibility of fifty five mustard germplasm and lines to alternaria blight or leaf spot caused by A. brassicae / A. brassicicola. Mustard accessions were screened in the research field of RARS, Jamalpur during 2019-2020. Seeds were sown in sterile soil in the field on November 09, 2019. The size of the experimental plot was 1.8 m × 0.6 m for each replication. Plant to plant and row-to-row distances were 15 cm and 30 cm, respectively. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. Recommended doses of fertilizer and cowdung were applied and other agronomic practices were done properly. The incidence of disease was monitored daily up to 60 days from sowing. The scale is as follows:

Where, N-1 to N-6 represents frequency of leaves in the respective score.

Scale	Description
0	No lesion
1 (HR)	Non-sporulating pinpoint size or small brown necrotic spots, < 5% leaf area covered by lesion
3 (R)	Small roundish slightly larger brown necrotic spots, about 1-2 mm in diameter with a distinct margin or yellow halo, 5-10% leaf area covered by lesion
5 (MR)	Moderately sporulating, non-coalescing, larger brown spots, about 2-4 mm in diameter with a distinct margin or yellow halo, 11-25% leaf area covered by the spots
7 (S)	Moderately sporulating, coalescing larger brown spots about 4-5 mm in diameter, 26-50% leaf area covered by the lesions
9 (HS)	Profusely sporulating, rapidly coalescing brown to black spots measuring more than 6 mm diameter without magins covering more than 50% leaf area

The accessions were categorized as resistant to highly susceptible depending on the percentage of disease of the plants. Obtained data were analyzed statistically using IRRI-STAR Nebula.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the germplasm1entry NAP-16081 was found highly resistant to alternaria blight having incidence less than 5%. Nineteen germplasm viz. Nap-15029, NAP-15037, NAP-16001, NAP-16006, NAP-16009, NAP-16013, NAP-16064, NAP-16068, NAP-16082 , NAP-18005, NAP-18025, NAP-18027 and NAP-18033 showed resistant by disease incidence percentage ranging from 5 to 25 were resistant for alternaria blight.
