Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A low-cost manually operated vegetable seedling transplantation has been developed in the Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during 2016-17. Seedlings of variable age and different sizes can be transplanted at variable spacing. It can save time, increase cropping intensity, help in seed/fertilizer placement and it is made of durable and cheap material affordable for the small scale peasant farmers. The operating, adjusting and maintaining principles are simple but for effective handling, it needs a skilled operator. The fabrication was done this year and the experiment will be continued in the next year for intensive evaluation.

Objectives:

i) To design and develop a manually operated multi-crop vegetable seedling transplanter
ii) To Test and performance evaluation of the vegetable transplanter
iii) To compare the performance of manually operated vegetable transplanting over the conventional method

Methodology:

A single person operated handheld multi-crop vegetable seedling transplanter was designed and fabricated in the Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute during 2016-17. a) Dimension of a seedling-The dimension of the seedling is important to decide the diameter of a hollow pipe, the height of jaw and apex angle. Maximum height of seedling within 120 mm and diameter within 65mm is ideal for the planter, Canopy of seedling should not be more than 100 mm and 80mm height. Any dimension of seedling size within this maximum limit is suitable for the transplanter. b) Preparation of bed- The height of the mulch bed is important to decide the height of the implement for human comfort. The dimension of the mulch bed is 200 mm in height and 600 mm to 900 mm in width is considered. c) Handgrip- The diameter of the handle is decided according to the average handgrip of human and also to maintain the distance between handle and lever which should not exceed 50 mm. d) Apex angle - The apex angle is an inclined angle formed between the three edges, It ranges between 36° to 60° for proper penetration of implement into the soil; therefore apex angle of the jaw is taken as 48°. The main working principle of the vegetable transplanter is lever operated. This prototype has a simple mechanism; the jaw is operated with a lever that is connected by a jaw operating gauge wire. The prototype in held position with a handle as the jaw penetrates into the soil bed, one seedling should be dropped into a hollow pipe, then the lever should be pulled. The action of the lever opens the jaw inside the soil, at that condition seedling is drop into the pit. Now the implement should be picked up in the same position (jaw in the open position), the outermost soil from the jaw will move towards the root zone of the seedling.

Achievement/Findings:

This implement is beneficial to small landholders and where there is a lack of availability of labor. It is light in weight, so handling is easy. It is a woman friendly agricultural machinery. It is very favorable for the health of farmers, as he doesn’t need to bend down every single time for each seedling. The fabrication cost of the transplanter is Tk. 2650/- which is economical even to the marginal farmer. It is low maintenance machinery and highly durable. So it is a one-time investment. It is designed to transplant vegetable crops i.e. tomatoes, chili, capsicum etc., but the canopy of seedling must be below 100 mm. It can insert onion, garlic, potato and other flower bulbs in 3~4.5 inch depth under the soil. So it can also act as a seed planter. It can also be used to insert dry fertilizer inside the soil. The equipment is simple in design and cheap in price. Two main disadvantages of the transplanter are, it requires a skilled operator for proper transplanting operation and for the best result, the soil should be dry and well-tilled.
