Evaluation of Grasspea Genotypes Early and Low-ß-odap (icarda) 2017 - 2018

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty-one Grasspea genotypes were collected from 50 genotypes previous year 2016-2017 International Trial of Grasspea and including two local checks were evaluated at Pulses Research Sub-Center, BARI, Gazipur during rabi 2017-18. The local checks BARI Kheseri-2and BARI Kheseri-3 were earlier than the exotic entries considering days to 50% flowering and 95% maturity. IFLA119, IFLA118, IFLA2750, and IFLA2924 and IFLA159 were the earliest among the exotic lines. No exotic lines could exceed the local check in case of yield. The imported lines IFLA119, IFLA2924, IFLA118, IFLA2781, IFLA2750, IFLA159 and the local collection were the high yielding entries.

Objectives:

With a view to having variable genotypes the morphological characterization of germplasm collected from different sources was done both for qualitative and quantitative traits from where some valuable lines based on seed size and yield potentiality were selected which will be helpful for further variety development works.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during the Rabi season of 2017-18 at Pulses Research Sub-Centre, BARI, Gazipur. A total of 21 germplasm from exotic and 2 local sources were evaluated. The experiment was laid out in an Alpha-lattice design with 2 replications. Each plot consisted of two rows of 4 m long with a row to row spacing of 50 cm and plant to the plant of about 10 cm. Each entry was sown on 20 November 2017 in 4 rows of 4m length plot. Fertilizers were used as per recommendation as basal during final land preparation. Data was recorded on one qualitative character like flower color and quantitative traits were collected from five plants randomly sampled where the traits comprised of days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, branches/plant, pods per plant, seeds per pods, pod length, pod width, 100 seed weight and grain yield per m². But in this experiment for analysis and discussion, only the data of 100 seed weight and yield per ha was used. The statistical analysis was done using GENSTAT-5.5 computer software.

Significant differences were found among the entries for all the characters except seed per pods. IFLA119 (48 days), IFLA118 (47 days took the shortest duration for 50% flowering followed by IFLA2750 (49 days) and IFLA 2341(49 days). For maturity IFLA119 (112 days), IFLA118 (112 days), IFLA2924 (112 days) and IFLA 159 (112 days) are followed by IFLA2750 (113days), IFLA2341 (114 days), IFLA2736 (114 days), IFLA2974 (113 days) and IFLA2765 (113days). For plant height IFLA1926 (54cm) showed the lowest value and the tallest plants were observed in the IFLA118 (79cm), IFLA159 (78 cm) and IFLA119 (80cm) followed by bio 520 (75cm), IFLA2460 (70cm), IFLA1826 (72cm) and IFLA 2341(70cm). The entries have insignificantly differed for no. seeds per pod where the highest and the lowest values were observed in IFLA118 (1.6) and bio520 (1) respectively. The highest value for 100 seed weight was found in IFLA118 (14.1gm) where IFLA1419 (5.2gm) was found with the lowest value. Local lines including check variety revealed lighter seeds than the imported lines. No entries could beat the yield of check variety (850kg ha^-1). IFLA118 (630kg ha^-1), IFLA 2998 (653kg ha^-1), IFLA 2282 (640kg ha^-1), IFLA 119 (580kg ha^-1), IFLA 2974 (578kg ha^-1) and IFLA2765 (590kg ha^-1) were very close to the check for yield. Due to the late availability of seeds sowing time of the trial was too late according to local practice which might affect crop duration. Irrigation also may cause delayed flowering and maturity. None of the entries showed the expected maturity period within the 110 to 115 days as per prediction by ICARDA. All the lines were infested by aphid at the early vegetative growth stage and pod borer at the later stage. Among the twenty-one entries these entries IFLA119, IFLA2750, IFLA118 and IFLA2781 were selected as yield and earliness. On the other hand IFLA12924, IFLA2998, IFLA2974 and IFLA2765 were selected as a yield and Low-B-ODAP. It requires further study with optimum sowing time, nodulation and stress breeding before drawing final conclusion about crop duration as well as yield.
