Screening of Composts and Biochars Against Seedling Disease Caused by Sclerotium Rolfsii of Barley

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Tricho-compost, composts and biochars have the potential to improve soil fertility and crop productivity. A field experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Plant Pathology Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during 2019-20 cropping season to observe the efficacy of Tricho-compost, vermin-compost, organic compost and three different biochars viz. biochar-1, biochar-2 and biochar-3 against soil borne pathogen Sclerotium rolfsii of barley. Results from this study revealed that all the treatment have signicant effect in reduction of seedling disease of barley caused by soil borne pathogen S. rolfsii and increasing the plant growth parameters such as shoot height, shoot weight, root length and root weight as well as yield of barley compared the control. Seed treatment with Provax was found similar effect for decreasing seedling mortality and enhancing plant growth and yield of barley. The findings revealed that utilization of Tricho-compost, composts and biochars have positive effect on the improvement plant growth and crop productivity as well as disease suppression of barley.

Objectives:

The present study has been taken to screen the available biochars and organic compost against major soil borne pathogen S. rolfsii of barley

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the field of Plant Pathology Division, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2018-19 cropping season. There were 8 treatments viz. (i) seed treatment with Provax (ii) soil amendment with organic compost (iii) soil amendment with vermin-compost (iv) soil amendment with Tricho-compost, (v) soil amendment with biochar-1 (vi) soil amendment with biochar-2 (vii) soil amendment with biochar-3 and (viii) control. The unit plot size was 3 m x 2.5 m. RCB design was followed with 3 replications. T. harzianum was multiplied in the mixture of Grasspea and wheat bran with mustard oilcake substrates. The formulated Trichoderma was used to mass multiplication in the cow dung based composting materials which called Trico-compost. Comercially available organic and vermin compost were collected from the company. Biochar-1 was collected from Soil Science Division, BARI. Biochar-2 and biochar-3 were collected from company. The field soil was inoculated with S. rolfsii colonized substrate consisting of grass pea bran, wheat bran and mustard oilcake @ 100g/m² of soil and allowed the pathogen establishment in the soil for 7 days. Then the S. rolfsii inoculated soil was challenged with organic compost, vermin-compost, Tricho-compost and biochars @ 3 t/ha kept for 5 days. In case of chemical treatment, seeds were treated with Provax @ 2.5 g/kg seeds before seed sowing. The seeds of barley var. BARI Barley-2 were sown @100 kg ha^-1in the experimental plots with maintaining row to row distance of 20 cm. Proper intercultural operations were done for better growth of barley in the field. No plant protecting chemicals (insecticides or fungicides) were applied in the field. Data were collected on percentage of seedling mortality, plant growth parameters such as shoot height, shoot weight, root length and root weight. The yield of barley per unit area was also recorded. Data were analyzed statistically by using the MSTATC program. The treatment effects were compared following least significant difference (LSD) test (P=0.05).

Achievement/Findings:

This study suggested that soil amendment with Tricho-compost, vermin-compost, organic compost and different biochars were found effective for management seedling blight disease caused by S. rolfsii and increasing plant growth and yield of barley. Seed treatment with chemical fungicide Provax also gave promising results. This is first year experiment and further study is needed to confirm the results.
