Screening of Composts and Biochars Against Seedling Disease Caused by Sclerotium Rolfsii and Fusarium Oxysporum of Lentil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the pot house of Plant Pathology Division, BARI to observe the efficacy of three compost viz. Tricho-compost, vermin-compost and organic compost and three biochar viz. biochar-1, biochar-2 and biochar-3 against foot and root rot disease of lentil caused by Sclerotium rolsfii and Fusarium oxysporum. The present study revealed that soil amendment with Tricho-compost, vermin-compost, organic compost, biochar-1, biochar-2 and biochar-3 are effective for reducing seedling mortality and increasing seed germination and plant growth of lentil under pot house condition. Seed treatment with Provax also better treatment for management of foot and root rot disease of lentil. This is first year experiment so further study is needed for confirmation the results

Objectives:

The present study has been taken to screen the available biochars and composts against foot and root rot disease of lentil

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted in the pot house of Plant Pathology Division, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2019-20. There were 8 treatments viz. (i) seed treatment with Provax (ii) soil amendment with organic compost (iii) soil amendment with vermin-compost (iv) soil amendment with Tricho-compost, (v) soil amendment with biochar-1 (vi) soil amendment with biochar-2 (vii) soil amendment with biochar-3 and (viii) control. CRD design was followed with 5 replications. T. harzianum was multiplied in the mixture of Grasspea and wheat bran with mustard oilcake substrates. The formulated Trichoderma was used to mass multiplication in the cow dung based composting materials which called Trico-compost. Comercially available organic and vermi compost were collected from the company. Biochar-1 was collected from Soil Science Division, BARI. Biochar-2 and biochar-3 were collected from company. Soil was inoculated with S. rolfsii and F. oxysporum colonized mixture of Grasspea and wheat bran along with mustard oilcake substrates @20 g/kg soil before seed sowing. The S. rolfsii and F. oxysporum inoculated soil was challenged with organic compost and vermi-compost @ 100 g/kg soil. Tricho-compost and biochars were used @ 5% (w/w). In case of chemical treatment, seeds were treated with Provax @ 2.5 g/kg seeds before seed sowing. Data were collected on percentage of seedling mortality, plant growth parameters such as shoot height, shoot weight, root length and root weight. The percent data were converted into arcsine transformation values before statistical analysis. Data were analyzed statistically by using the MSTATC program. The treatment effects were compared by applying the least significant different (LSD) test at P=0.05 level.
