Management of Downy Mildew Disease of Cucumber Caused by Pseudoperonospora Cubensis in Farmer’s Field in Langolkot, Cumilla

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out in the farmer’s field in langolkot, cumilla to find out effective control measure against downy mildew disease in cucumber under natural field conditions. Five treatments viz. i) Dynamic WP @ 1 g L^-1 of water, ii) Fizimite @ 1 g L^-1 of water, iii) Bioderma @ 5 g L^-1 of water, iv) Metaril 72 WP @ 2 g L^-1 of water and v) Control or unsprayed. All the treatments minimized the disease significantly providing higher yield compared to control. Lowest (1.33) disease score was obtained from Bioderma and Metaril treated plots.Dynamic and Fizimite also have a significant effect over control. The highest (17.06 t/ha) yield was obtained also from material treated plots which were statistically similar to the Bioderma treated plots. The lowest (7.57 t/ha) yield was obtained from the control plot.

Objectives:

To develop disease management package of cucumber in cumilla

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the farmers’ field atlangolkot, cumilla. A cucumber variety ‘Naogaon green’ was sown on 18.12.2019. Fertilizer application was Urea 5.0 kg; TSP- 10 Kg; MoP 5.0 Kg; Gypsum 5.0 kg; Znso₄-1.0 kg; Boric Acid -1.0 kg &Furadan 0.5 kg for 10 decimals of land. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Treatments were assigned to each block at random. The space between the blocks and between the plots was 0.50m. The unit plot size was4 m X 5 m. Seeds were sown maintaining a row to row distance of 100 cm and plant to plant distance was 70 cm. Three irrigation was given throughout the cropping period. Five treatments viz. i) Dynamic WP @ 1 g L^-1 of water, ii) Fizimite @ 1 g L^-1 of water, iii) Bioderma @ 5 g L^-1 of water, iv) Metaril 72 WP @ 2 g L^-1 of water and v) Control or unsprayed was applied. A bio-fungicide Recharge was applied in the soil immediately after seed sowing @ 2 g L^-1 of water three times at an interval of 15 days. Spray material was applied four times starting from 55 DAS at an interval of 8 days.

Data collection:

Disease scoring: Downey mildew disease of cucumber was assessed following a 5 point scoring scale described by Charoenwattanaet al. 2017 where, 0 – no foliar symptoms, 1 – 1-20 % symptoms, 2 – 21-40 % symptoms, 3 – 41- 60 %, symptoms, 4 – 61-80 % symptoms, 5 – 81-100 % symptoms. A number of plant population per plot, No. of fruit per plant, fruit weight per plant, Individual fruit weight (g), and Fruit Yield (t/ha) was also recorded following standard procedure.

Statistical Analysis

The quantitative data were examined using an analysis of variance (ANOVA) and means were compared at a significant probability level of p<0.05 using the Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the above results it can be concluded that downy mildew of cucumber can be managed both bio-rationally and chemically. Bio-rational product was equally effective as a chemical product. Spraying of Dynamic WP @ 1 g L^-1 of water or Fizimite @ 1 g L^-1 of water or Bioderma @ 5 g L^-1 of water 4 times at an interval of 8 days can effectively control the downy mildew disease in cucumber. This is the first year result and this experiment should be repeated in the next year in the same location for further confirmation
