Garlic clove planting is one of the most laborious operations. Labor cost is the main source of the high production cost of garlic. Because of the geometrical uniqueness and irregularity of garlic cloves, the mechanization of garlic clove planting is very difficult. To overcome price competition against the imported garlic, however, there has been a need for the development of a clove metering device and a planting device for the garlic clove planter. Laboratory tests and field tests were conducted to develop a garlic clove planter. This research was conducted to drop garlic cloves into soil holes through an inclined plate metering system. A Power tiller is driven garlic clove planter has been developed with locally available materials in Spices Research Centre, BARI, Shibganj, Bogra during 2014-15. The garlic clove planter consists of i) Garlic clove hopper; ii) Inclined plate metering device; and iii) Power transmission system. From the field test, the average garlic clove to clove spacing was found 9.85 cm. Detailed performance of the planter and modification will be evaluated in the next season.

Objectives

Development of the seed metering device: Inclined plate type seed metering device for maize planting was modified for garlic clove planting. Due to garlic clove thickness the clove was dropped from metering device groove during rotation of metering device. Because of garlic clove thickness more than maize, plywood board was used to develop this type of metering device.

Modification of Power transmission system: The Power transmission system of the planter was modified due to displacement of chain from sprocket by vibration of engine during operation. Therefore this improvement was proven successfully.

Changed chain sprocket for adjusting garlic clove to clove distance: Initially the planter was tested with 19-teeth chain sprocket for garlic clove placement in soil. The spacing of garlic clove to clove is 10 cm x 10 cm. After testing, the 15-teeth chain sprocket was found for optimum spacing (10 cm) of garlic clove placement with trial and error method.

Performance test and evaluation: Laboratory test-Laboratory test was carried out to determine the seed rate of this planter. The power tiller operated bed planter was operated on a pre-measured 10 m travel distance. Transparent polythene bags were tagged with each of the two seed delivery tubes.  After every 10m linear distance run, seeds collected through tubes were counted separately and the total seed weight was also noted. Since the seed metering device is connected by a chain -sprocket arrangement to the power tiller wheel axel, the speed of the tiller should not be a factor in calibration, unless there is wheel slippage.

Field test: The field test was conducted in Spices Research Centre, BARI, Shibganj, Bogra. Three rows (2m each length) was taken as three replication to observe the accuracy of planting.

Data collection: The following data were collected during the test: (i) Garlic clove placement (cm), ii) No. of missing seed, iii) No. of double placing, and iv) No. of breakage seed.

The present study was conducted to develop the seed metering system of a power tiller operated garlic clove planter. The garlic clove planter was designed with locally available materials. The planter was not tested well due to machine unavailability before the planting season. From the field test, the average garlic clove to clove spacing was found 9.85 cm. Detailed performance of the planter and modification will be evaluated in the next season.
