Development of a Power Coconut Dehusker (2016 – 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Coconut produced annually about 0.37 million tons in Bangladesh. The husk of the coconut is removed for getting nut and skin as raw materials in coconut oil industries and for edible purposes in the household level. Husking is done manually by sharp iron in oil industries and retail markets in our country. The work is hard and required high skill and strength. The study was undertaken to develop a power coconut husking machine for dehusking coconut easily and quickly. This study was conducted at Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process Engineering Division, Gazipur during 2016-2017. It was made of locally available MS (mild steel) materials. The overall dimension was 910×690×1130 mm. Functional parts of the machine were the mainframe, power transmission system, dehusking unit and electric motor. The dehusking unit consisted of two rotating spike roller made of galvanized iron (GI) pipe along with some spikes. An electrical motor of 2.24 kW was used as a prime mover. Motor rpm was stepped down from 1450 to145 by means of a gear reducer (ratio: 1:10). The operating speeds of the drive and driven spike rollers were 28 rpm and 18 rpm respectively. The weight of the machine is 250 kg. The capacity of the machine ranged from 250 to 313 coconuts per hour. The husking efficiency was 97 percent. The capacity of the machine was about two times more of the traditional husking. The breakage of nuts was found to be 7.78 per-cents. The operating cost of coconut was Tk.400 1000 nuts. The price of the machine was Tk.62000.

Objectives:

To avoid this problem a mechanical high capacity and efficient husking machine is developed for commercial purpose.

Methodology:

The mechanical coconut dehusking was designed with the following consideration: i. The capacity of the machine should be 400-500 nuts per hour; ii. It should be portable ( for easy movement); iii. Fabrication cost should be minimum as possible; iv. Power transmission system should be easy; v. Minimum power should be used. A power coconut dehusking was designed and fabricated with the local raw materials in Farm Machinery & Postharvest Process Engineering Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur in 2015-16. All the parts are designed using Solid Works Software version 12. It was made of GI pipe, MS spike, MS angle bar, MS shaft, MS sheet, MS plate, motor, belt-pulley, chain sprocket, gear reducer, pinion, etc. The main working parts of the machine were the rotating spike roller; motor, chain sprocket.

Achievement/Findings:

A power coconut dehusking was designed and fabricated with locally available MS materials at FMPE Division, BARI, Gazipur in 2016-17. 864 mm × 622 mm × 990 mm. The capacities of the machine were ranged from 250 to 313 nuts per hour The power required for the operating machine is an electrical motor of 2 kW. The price of the machine is 62000 taka. The cleaning efficiency is about 97% and the dehusking cost is low due to the high capacity machine. The farmers could not effort the machine but traders or communities able to purchase the machine for commercial purposes. The adoption of the machine would be done among the coconut growing farmers, traders and entrepreneurs of the coconut oil industry through demonstration, training, workshop and mass media. Further research on the performance of the machine should be increased and breakage percentage would be reduced in next year under the sub-project of NATP-Phase II.
