Deep placement of NPK briquettes hammered the runoff, fixation, leaching, and volatilization loss of fertilizer. But the deep placement of fertilizer is a laborious job and costly. A manually operated NPK briquette applicator for upland crops was developed at Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during 2014-15. The covering part of the applicator was modified to improve its performance during 2015-16. The applicator was modified for deep placement of one NPK briquette by a single push. The average depth of placement of briquette was 7-8 cm. Hole coverage was 75-80 % and the distance between plant and briquette was 9-10 cm. There was no missing of NPK briquette during laboratory and field tests. The average field capacity of the applicator was 10 decimal/h (depend on the fertilizer requirement of crop). There were no significant differences in yields among the treatments. But maximum yields were found in NPK briquette application by hand and applicator, which are very similar. It has a good response to the NPK briquette application by machine or hand for long duration crops such as chilli, brinjal, tomato, etc. This experiment will be continued to the next year for the improvement of the applicator for its better performance.

To develop a manual dry land fertilizer applicator for NPK application and to test the applicator both in experimental plot and laboratory. 

A manual dry land NPK briquette applicator was developed during 2013-14. It consists of hoper, funnel, delivery pipe, push rod, feeding pipe, etc. Originally this machine was developed by IFDC, which is using for USG application in paddy field, In this experiment modified only lower part of the machine. Locally available materials were used to fabricate the lower part of the machine-like as MS sheet, nut, bolt, spring, etc. After fabrication, the machine can easily covered NPK briquette. At first machine was arranged in triangular shape and three NPK briquettes deep placed by single push. But more power was required to operate the machine. Now the machine has been developed for deep placement of one NPK briquette by single one push. It is comparatively easy to operate and less power required than previous version. There were some problems in the applicator specially in the covering part.   This part was redesigned to eliminate the problems during 2015-16. The width of vertical flat bar reduced from 30 to 20mm and angle type. Other dimensions and configurations remained same as before. Specification of NPK briquette applicator. 

Working principle

Before pushing the machine, the horizontal flat part of the applicator has to be set 2.5-3cm clearance from the seedling body, otherwise, the distance between the briquette and plant should not be accurate. The applicator required a single push for one NPK briquette. When pushing the handle of the machine, NPK briquette is entered into the feeding pipe one after another by normal jerking and delivered to the delivery pipe by roller metering. Before finished the briquette in the funnel and feeding pipe, 15 to 20 numbers, of briquette is fed into the funnel.  It was designed in Auto CAD 2012, which is shown in Fig. 3. After fabrication, the machine was tested for NPK briquette placement. The recently lower part of the applicator was modified. Experiments were conducted at the FPME divisional research farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 2015-16.  The machine were tested in tomato. cabbage, chilli, and brinjal field. Last year, the applicator was tested only for chilli. NPK briquette applicator has placed 7-8cm deep and covered the hole properly. The experiment was designed in RCB method with three replications and four treatments The treatment were T1- application of NPK briquette by applicator10 (DAT), T2- application of NPK briquette by hand 10 DAT, T3- application of prilled NPK at briquette dose by hand 10 DAT, T4- application of prilled NPK at standard dose by hand 10 DAT and 50 DAT. The date of transplanting was 06 March 2014 and variety was Chilli line CO525. The fertilizer was used 10% less urea in NPK briquette and other fertilizer used at standard dose. The average field capacity of the manual dry land NPK briquette applicator was 10 decimal/h (depend on fertilizer requirements of crops).  In the case of yield, there were no significant differences among the treatments for all crops.  But averagely maximum yields were found in treatment T2 andT1, which are very close. It has a good response to the NPK briquette application by machine or hand for long-duration crops like as chilli, brinjal, tomato, etc. The experiment will be continued to the next year for the improvement of the applicator for its better performance.
