Development of Biorational Management Package Against Root Knot Nematode and Bacterial Wilt of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the field of Plant Pathology Division, BARI during the 2019-20 cropping season to develop eco-friendly integrated management technology against bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum and root-knot nematode caused by Meloidogyne incognita diseases of tomato. During this year bacterial disease was not observed in the experiment field. Root knot nematode infested field soils were treated with a different combination of Trichoderma based Tricho-compost with commercial biofungicide Decoprima, Dynamic and Soil recharge and also the integration of Soil recharge with Decoprima and Dynamic. It was revealed that all the treatments gave an appreciable reduction of gall development on roots and increased plant growth parameters such as shoot and root growth as well as the yield of tomato. Among the treatments, integration Tricho-compost with Decoprima and Soil recharge as well as the integration of Soil recharge with Decoprima are the best treatments in reducing root-knot nematode disease as well as increasing plant growth and yield of tomato. Integration of Tricho-compost with Dynamic, Soil recharge with Dynamic and bio-fungicide Decoprima alone were also better in reducing root-knot nematode disease incidence and increasing plant growth as well as the yield of tomato.

Objectives:

The present study has been undertaken to develop biorational based eco-friendly integrated management packages against root knot and bacterial diseases of tomato

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during Rabi 2019-20 in the field of Plant Pathology Division BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. There were 7 treatments viz. (i) BARI Tricho-compost-2+ Dynamic (bio-fungicide) (ii) Soil recharge + Dynamic (bio-fungicide) (iii) Soil recharge + BARI Tricho-compost-2 (iv) Decoprima (bio-fungicide) (v) Decoprima (bio-fungicide) + Soil recharge (vi) Decoprima (bio-fungicide) + Tricho-compost-2 (vii) Farmers practices. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The unit plot size 3m x 3m keeping 1m distance from plot to plot. Plant to plant distance 50 cm and line to line distance 60 cm was maintained. Trichoderma harzianum isolates collected and isolated previously in Plant Pathology Division was multiplied in the mixture of Grasspea and wheat bran with mustard oilcake substrates. The formulated Trichoderma was used to mass multiplication in the cow dung based composting materials which called Tricho-compost-2. Other bio-fungicides viz. Soil recharge, Dynamic and Decoprima were collected from a different company. The field soil were inoculated with @ 1 gm galled chopped roots of Indian spinach per plant at the time of seedling transplanting. Tricho-compost was added in the field soil 5 days before seedling transplanting. Bio-fungicides viz. Soil recharge, Dynamic and Decoprima were used twice, one is 5 days before seedling transplanting and the second time was 40 to 45 days after seedling transplanting. Furadan 5G was added before seedling transplanting. Twenty five days old tomato seedlings cv. BARITomato-15, grown on sterilized soils was transplanted in a field where ten additional seedlings were transplanted in between two lines in each plot. Fertilizers, weeding and irrigation were applied as per the recommendation of the crop. After 60-65 days of transplantation, the additional 10 seedlings from each plot were uprooted carefully without disturbing the root system for data recording.

Data collection and analysis: Data on different parameters viz. shoot height, shoot weight, root length, root weight, fruit number per plant and yield of tomato were taken. During the growing period, bacterial wilt incidence was recorded from the seedling to the maturity stage of the crop. Root knot disease severity was recorded as a gall index following 0-10 scale (Zeck, 1971). Data were analyzed statistically by using the MSTATC program. The treatment effects were compared by applying the least significant different (LSD) test at P=0.05 level.

From the present study, it may be concluded that integration of Trichoderma based bio-fungicide called Tricho-compost and commercial biofungicide Decoprima and soil recharge are effective for reducing root-knot disease, as well as increasing plant growth and receiving a higher yield of tomato.
