Screening of Lentil Lines Against Stemphylium Blight Disease Under Inoculated Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A set of 20 lentil germplasm were screened against stemphylium blight disease in the research field of Plant Pathology Division BARI, Gazipur. The twenty lentil test entries BD-3804, BD-3808, BD-3810, BD-3940, BD-3945, BD-3948, BD-3975, BD-3980, BD-3985, BD-3986, BD-3995, BD-4028, BD-4088, BD-4090, BD-4091, BD-4094, BD-4134, BD-5958, BD-5959 and BD-5983 which was collected from PGRC, BARI. BARI masur-1 and BARI masur- 8 was used as a susceptible check and resistant check variety respectively. Lowest (1.00) stemphylium blight disease score and highest (1440.80 kg/ha) yield was recorded in resistant check variety BARI masur- 8 which was statistically similar with BD-3940 and BD-5959. The highest (3.33) disease score with the lowest (630.60 kg/ha) yield was recorded in the check variety BARI masur-1.

Objectives:

To identify the resistant source of lentil against stemphylium blight

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the rabi season of 2018-2019 in the research field of Plant Pathology Division, BARI, Gazipur. Twenty lentil test entries viz. BD-3804, BD-3808, BD-3810, BD-3940, BD-3945, BD-3948, BD-3975, BD-3980, BD-3985, BD-3986, BD-3995, BD-4028, BD-4088, BD-4090, BD-4091, BD-4094, BD-4134, BD-5958, BD-5959 and BD-5983, collected from PGRC, BARI were used in this experiment. A stemphylium blight disease susceptible variety BARI Masur-1 was used as a spreader row. Susceptible check entry was planted after two test entries in each replication. Four replications were used in this experiment. Each test entry was planted in single row of 3m long allowing a row to row space of 30cm and plant to plant 10cm. This experiment was planted on 15 November 2018 and was monitored regularly to observe the first appearance of the disease. Stemphylium infected plant debris which was collected from last years’ infected field was spread over the field to boost up the inoculum pressure. Before spreading the plant debris, inoculum level and viability of spores were tested. Other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Disease scoring was done following 5 point scoring scale described by Bakr and Ahmed (1992) where, 0 = no infection (HR), 1 = a few scattered leaf infections but no twig blighted (R), 2 = 5-10% leaflet infection and/or few scattered twigs blighted (MR), 3 = 11-20% Leaflet infected and/or 1-5% twigs blighted (MS), 4 = 21-50% leaflet infected and/or 6-10% twigs blighted, and 5 = above 51% leaflet infected and/or more than 10% twigs blighted (HS). The data were analyzed statistically for calculating the mean values and for test of significance.

The means were compared following the Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

All the test entries varied significantly considering their disease score and yield in this trial. The lowest (1.00) stemphylium blight disease score was recorded in BD-3940, BD-5959 and resistant check BARI masur-8 which was statistically similar with BD-3804, BD-3808, BD-3985, BD-3986 and BD-4028. The highest (3.33) disease score was in BARI masur-1 and BD-4088. Moderate disease score was observed in some of the other test entries. Among the test entries, the highest (1382.40 kg/ha) yield was produced by the entry BD-3940 which was statistically similar to the entry BD-3959 and the resistant check BARI masur-8. The higher yield was also produced by some other test entries. The lowest (630.60 kg/ha) yield was recorded in the check variety BARI masur-1. This year stemphylium blight disease severity was not so high. In general most of the entries showed the moderately resistant type of reaction against stemphylium blight disease and the yield performance of those entries was also satisfactory (>1 ton/ha).
