Mango harvester is mainly used for harvesting mango fruits with less drudgery, fatigue on labour, also preventing damage to the tree branches & fruits as compared to manual plucking and tree shaking. A mango harvester was designed and fabricated of Farm Machinery & Postharvest Process Engineering Division, BARI, Gazipur during 2014-15 to reduce postharvest loss. During 2014-15, the weight of the aluminium mango harvester was 4.1 kg whereas it was reduced to 2 kg during 2015-16. Furthermore, the weight of the modified bamboo harvester was 1.7 kg and existing bamboo harvester was 1.5 kg. The mango was harvested from different heights mango trees in different location of BARI campus, Gazipur and RHRS, Chapainawabganj. During 2015-2016, the highest capacity of the aluminium harvester was 222 kg/h   and the modified bamboo harvester was 156 kg/h. When mangoes were harvested by the aluminium harvester, 93% of mangoes were found with pedicel length above1-1.5 cm whereas it was 92% for the modified bamboo harvester. During 2014-2015, the initial cost of the aluminium harvester was Tk 5800 and it reduced to Tk 2200 during 2015-16. The initial cost of the modified bamboo harvester was Tk.1000 and the existing bamboo harvester was 450. The farmer has to face a problem when mango is harvested climbing on a tree because of fitting the clutch lever at the end position of the harvester. The experiment will be continued for the improvement of the harvester in the next year.

Objectives

a) To modify the existing mango harvester for easy harvesting of mango

b) To evaluate the performance of the harvester

c) To make an economic analysis of the harvester

The mango harvester was designed and fabricated at the workshop of the Farm Machinery & Postharvest Process Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2014-2015. It was made of locally available materials. The materials used for fabrication of different parts of the harvester were high carbon steel, MS flat bar, MS rod, MS sheet, nut-bolt, clutch cable, clutch lever, aluminum pipe and other small items.

Description of the machine: This manual mango harvester has an oval-shaped ring that is 200mm in diameter. The ring has worn rubber to minimize the hardness of ring which sometimes causes injuries to mango.  Nylon net was attached to the ring to hold the mangoes when they are cut by the knife. There is an angle adjuster which is connected to the ring and aluminum pipe by clamp, made of MS sheet. The height of the mango harvester can be maintained up to 3300 mm by inserting 25 mm diameter pipe into 30 mm diameter pipe. A cutting mechanism is provided at one end of the ring. The cutting blade is divided into two parts which are held together by a nut bolt and attached to the knife arm, tension spring and clutch cable. For harvesting mango, the harvester is raised and pedicels of the fruit are taken in between the sharp edge of the blade where it is serrated. When the cable lever is pressed the cutter will cut the fruit from its node by applying the lever push action through the clutch cable.

The capacity of mango harvester depends on various factors such as the height of the trees, the yield of mangoes, operator ability, the weight of the machine etc.The highest capacity of modified aluminium and modified bamboo harvester was found at 222 kg/h and 156 kg/h when a number of mangoes per kg was two. When mangoes were harvested by the aluminium harvester, 93% of mangoes were found with pedicel length above1-1.5 cm whereas it was 92% for modified bamboo harvester.  Due to high price of the aluminium holder the initial price of the aluminium harvester was more during 2014-15. The experiment will be continued in the next year for its better performance.
