Comparative Performance of Different Olitorius Varieties of BJRI for Determining Disease Incidence, Seed Quality, Seed Yield and Fibre Yield Following Line Sowing Method in the Field

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Jute Agriculture Experimental Station (JAES), Manikgonj and Kishoregonj Regional Station (KRS), Kishoregonj of BJRI during the period April 2016 to December 2017. Four olitorius varieties viz. O-72, O-9897, O-795 and OM-1 were used for this experiment. Before spraying highest total disease incidence (13.27%) and lowest total disease incidence (2.11%) were recorded at KRS and JAES respectively. After spraying, the highest total disease incidence (5.08%) at KRS was recorded in O-795 variety and the lowest total disease incidence (2.11%) at JAES was recorded in O-72 variety. The highest mean fibre yield/plant (10.29 gm) and fibre yield/ha (3.55 ton) of two locations were recorded in OM-1 and O-9897 varieties, respectively. The highest mean stick yield/plant (21.88 gm) and stick yield/ha (8.32 ton) of two locations were recorded in O-9897 variety. The highest mean seed yield/plant (3.81 gm) and seed yield/ha (318.89 kg) of both locations were recorded in O-9897 and OM-1 variety, respectively.

Objectives:

Comparative studies on disease incidence and severity of recommended varieties of jute were done with a view to helping the breeders to develop disease-resistant varieties. For this purpose this experiment help the farmers to produced high yielding.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Jute Agriculture Experimental Station (JAES), Manikgonj and Kishoregonj Regional Station (KRS), Kishoregonj of BJRI during the period April 2016 to December 2017. Experimental details: The plot size for each variety was 2.5 x 4m2 following RCBD with 3 replication. Normal agronomical practices and fertilizer doses were applied as per recommendation. No plant protection measures were taken till harvest to facilitate the natural disease occurrence infestations. Disease incidence and severity were recorded. The olitorius varieties are O-72, O-9897, O-795 and OM-1. Records were kept: Date of sowing, Plant stand/ Plant population, Disease incidence, Plant height (M), Base Diameter (mm), Fibre yield per plant (gm), Fibre yield per hectare (ton), Stick yield per plant (gm), Stick yield per hectare (ton), Seed yield per plant (gm) and Seed yield per hectare (kg). Statistical analysis: Data were analysed statistically and treatments effects were compared by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The relation between seed borne fungal pathogens and germination was observed with regression equations. Relationships between disease severity and seed, fibre and stick yield were also observed by linear regression lines and equations (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

Above the four varieties, O-9897 had the best performance. O-9897 variety showed the lowest disease incidence and highest fibre, stick, and seed yield.
