Effect of Sowing Time and Variety on Leaf Yield, Seed Yield and Yield Contributing Characters of Vegetables Jute

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Jute (Corchorus sp.) is consumed as a leafy vegetable in many parts of the world. An experiment was conducted at Jute Research Regional Station, Rangpur, Bangladesh to find out the effect of sowing time and variety on leaf and seed yield and yield contributing characters of jute as vegetables. The highest leaf yield per m² (875g) and leaf area per cm² (37.76) was recorded for Acc-3840 in May sowing (S₂xV₄₎. The highest seed yield per m² was recorded (778 g) for February sowing in Mehra red variety (S₁x V₂₎.

Objectives:

We are still in lack to find out ideal jute variety to fulfill vegetable demand round the year.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at Jute Research Regional Station, Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, Rangpur during the period from February 2019 to January 2020, to develop jute variety used as vegetable round the year. The land was prepared by ploughing and cross ploughing with laddering. The field was high land having well-drained silty loam soil. Three indigenous Germplasm (Birol, Merha red and Merha green) of Corchoruscapsularis collected from a different location from Bangladesh and Accession-3840 of Corchorusolitorius collected from genetic resources and seed division of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute were used as treatments and BJRI released variety eg., BJRI deshi pat shak-1 and Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) released variety eg., BINA pat shak-1 were used as control. The unit plot size was 2mx2m and seeds were sown in the broadcast. 5.0g seed is used per plot. Data were collected 30 days after germination (DAG). All intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Fertilizers were applied according to BJRI variety recommendations. Data were subjected to ANOVA using MSTAT-C (Gomez and Gomez, 1984). Treatment means were separated with LSD (Least significant difference).
