Effect of Plant Population on Deshi Jute for Quality Seed Poduction

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Jute Seed Production and Research Center, Nashipur, Dinajpur, Bangladesh from August 2013 to February 2014 to determine the effect of plant population on seed yield and quality of deshi jute in the late season. The experiment comprised of three varieties (viz. CVL-1, BJRI Deshi pat-5, BJRI Deshi pat-6) and four types of plant populations (viz. 20, 30, 40, and 50 plants per sqm). Results revealed that the highest seed yield (946 kg ha^-1) was obtained in CVL-1 with a plant population of 40 m^-2.

Objectives:

To find out the suitable variety and optimum plant population per unit area for quality seed production of white jute.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Jute Seed Production and Research Centre, Nashipur, Dinajpur, Bangladesh during August 2013 to February 2014 to determine the effect of plant population on seed yield and quality of deshi jute in the late season. The experiment comprised three varieties (VIZ. CVL-1,BJRI Deshi pat-5 and BJRI Deshi pat-6) and four plant populations (viz. 20, 30, 40 and 50 plants per sq. m). The trial was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 3 m× 2 m. The crop was harvested at maturity. Stage (i.e. when 70% of the capsules become brown in color). Threshing was done after 2-3 days of sun drying. Then seeds were dried on a jute mat kept on the cemented floor for 5-6 days to keep moisture content around 8%. After cleaning the seed was stored in thick polythene bags and kept in the laboratory until further use for quality tests. Prior to harvesting, ten plants from each plot were harvested to weight, seed yield plant^-1. A standard laboratory germination test was also done. The collected data on different yield relented parameter and seed quality was statistically analyzed (Gomez and Gomez, 1983)

Achievement/Findings:

It may be concluded that CVL-1 performs better than the rest of the two varieties namely BJRI Deshi Pat-5 and BJRi Deshi Pat-6 with the combined effect of 40 plants m^-2 area. So, the variety CVL-1 is better than the two varieties BJRI Deshi Pat-5 and BJRI Deshi Pat-6 with the combined effect of 40 plants m^-2.
