Quality of Kenaf Seed as Influenced by Planting Date and Method

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at the Regional Station, Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, Kishoreganj, Bangladesh from July to December 2010 and 2011 to determine the optimum sowing date and planting method of kenaf for seed production. The experiment comprised six dates of sowing viz., 15 July, 30 July, 15 August, 30 August, 15 September and 30 September and three planting methods viz. direct seeding, top cutting and seedling transplanting. The results revealed that seed germination percentage, seed vigor index (SVI), germination (%) after AA and EC values were found highly significant due to planting time, method and their interaction. It was found in interaction that the best quality seeds with germination (95.75% and 90.25%), seed vigor index (54.72 and 49.37), Electro-Conductivity value (13.21 and 14.19 µs cm^-1 g^-1) and Accelerated Ageing (AA) germination percentage (76.0% and 72.75%) were recorded when the seeds were sown on 30 July at transplanting method in both the years.

Objectives:

To find out the most suitable planting time and method of seed production for kenaf.

Methodology:

The study was conducted three planting methods viz., direct seeding, top cutting and seedling transplanting as treatments. The trial was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Kenaf variety HC-95 was used as a test crop. The land was uniformly fertilized during final land preparation @ 180-50-20-50, 110-50-18-100 and 110-50-20-100 kg ha-1 Urea, TSP, MoP and gypsum for direct seeding, top cutting and seedling transplanting methods, respectively. For the direct seeding method, the seed was sown @ 12kgha-1 at 30 cm distant rows. For the top cutting method, tops were collected from healthy and diseased free 100 days old plants. Selected tops were diagonally cut into pieces of 20 cm in length. Before cutting the top, bigger leaves were carefully removed. For the seedling transplanting method, 20 days of old seedling were transplanted at 30cm×15cm spacing after removing the leaves leaving 2-3 leaves at the top. The crop was hand-harvested at maturity (i.e. when 80% of the capsules become brown in color). Standard laboratory germination test, electrical conductivity and accelerated ageing tests were done to record on germination and vigor of seed. The collected data on different yield-related parameters and seed quality were statistically analyzed following the ANOVA technique. Differences among treatment means were adjusted by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test with the help of a computer-based statistical package program MSTAT-C

From the above results that kenaf seed quality varied due to planting date and method as well as with their interaction. Seeds sown during the 30 July with transplanting method gave the better quality of kenaf seeds.
