Effects of Different Levels of Arsenic Contamination on BRRI Dhan29

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The different rates of As application significantly decreased yield and yield contributing characters of BRRI dhan29. On the other hand, As concentrations of grain and straw increased significantly due to added As to soil. The rice straw had a much higher As concentration than the rice grain. Grain As concentration ranged from 0.37 µg g-1 when plants were grown without any As addition under the alternate wetting-drying condition to 1.52 µg g-1 in soil treated with 20 µg g-1 As and under continuous standing water condition. The straw As concentration ranged from 3.66 µg g-1 obtained from alternate wetting-drying conditions in As control pot to 13.5 µg g-1 in continuous standing water condition with 20 pm As an addition.

Objectives:

To find out different levels of arsenic contamination on BRRI DHAN29

Methodology:

The pot experiment was conducted in the net house of the Department of Soil Science of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU). Mymensingh. The University area is located in Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (AEZ 9). The experimental area has a subtropical humid climate and is characterized by high temperature accompanied by moderately high rainfall during kharif (March-October) season and low temperature in rabi (November-February) season. The soil was collected at a depth of 0-15 cm from Faridpur in Bangladesh After collection the soils were made free from the plant roots and other unnecessary materials and dried under the sunlight for four days. An amount of 7 kg soil was taken in a series of pots. The diameter of the pot was 43 cm and height was 40 cm. There were altogether 27 pots comprising 3 different arsenic treatments (viz. 0 µg g^-1 As, 10 µg g-¹ As & 20 µg g^-1 As) to BRRI dhan29 rice with 3 replications. Arsenic was added from sodium arsenate. Water was added to the pot to bring the soil up to saturation. Every pot received 100 µg g^-1 N, 25 µg g^-1 P, 50 µg g^-1 K and 25 µg g^-1 S from urea, TSP, MoP and gypsum, respectively. Except for nitrogen, the full dose of other elements was applied at the time of final pot preparation. Nitrogen was added in three equal splits; during pot preparation, 26 and 50 days after transplanting.

Achievement/Findings:

It appears from the present study that reduced the concentration of arsenic in rice grain and straw. However, further research on water management practices on boro rice in arsenic-contaminated areas is needed for its validation.
