Effect of Mulching on the Growth and Yield of Cabbage

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment consisted of four mulching viz. no mulch, black polythene mulch, water- hyacinth mulch and saw dust mulch. Mulching had a significant influence on plant height, the spread of the plant, length of root per plant, number of lateral roots, fresh weight of roots, length of the stem, fresh weight of stem, fresh weight of the head, the diameter of the head and gross yield and marketable yield. Black polythene mulch produced taller plants with a wider spread than other mulch. The number of loose leaves per plant at different DAT except 60 DAT was significantly influenced by mulching. The length of the stem, fresh weight of stem, length of root, number of lateral roots, fresh weight of root were significantly influenced by mulching. The higher diameter of the head, the thickness of head biomass weight of the plant and fresh weight of head were obtained black polythene mulch (63.43 t ha ^-1) than no mulch treatment (36.71 t ha^-1.)

Objectives:

To study the growth and yield of cabbage under different mulches.

Methodology:

The variety of Cabbage used in the experiment was Atlas-70. It is a hybrid variety produced by Sakata seed corporation, Japan. The seeds were collected from A.R. Malik and Co. (Pvt) Ltd., Siddique Bazar, Dhaka. The variety Atlas -70 is a standard and popular variety in Bangladesh. Seedlings were raised at the Horticultural centre, Kewatkhali, Mymensingh in two seedbeds of 5m x 1 m size. The soil of the seedbeds was well ploughed and prepared well to provide a favourable condition for the growth of young seedlings. The seedbed was dried in the sun to protect the young seedlings from the infestation of damping-off disease. The seeds were sown in the seedbed on 25 October 2001 to get seedlings of 25 days at the time of planting. After sowing, seeds were then covered with finished light soil. Twenty grams of seeds were sown in each seedbed. Shading was provided by bamboo mat to protect the seedlings from heavy rainfall. Within 7days from sowing, seed emergence was completed. Dithane M-45 @35.4 g per 10 litre water was sprayed on the seedlings in seedbed at 15 days after sowing to control the damping-off and other diseases. Other intercultural operations such as watering, weeding and mulching etc were done as and when required to provide an environment favourable for raising quality seedlings. The experiments were conducted following Randomized Block Design (RCBD) having three replications. Treatments that consisted of the experiment were: M 0= control (No mulch), M 1 = Black polythene mulch, M 2= Water –hyacinth mulch, M 3= Sawdust mulch. Manures and fertilizers were applied to the experimental plots well-decomposed cowdung was applied @ 10 t ha^-1 and incorporated into the soil just after opening land. Urea and Triple superphosphate (TSP) was applied @250 and 125 kg ha^-1. MP was applied @ 0, 75, 150 and 250 kg K₂O ha ^-1).

Achievement/Findings:

It was clear that higher production of cabbage is possible by using appropriate mulches. Though black polythene mulch yielded the highest among the treatments, it involves high cost and is not readily available. Therefore, water- hyacinth mulch could be recommended for maximum production of cabbage
