Survey on Major Coconut Diseases of Coconut in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Seven coconut growing regions were surveyed. In the surveyed areas four diseases of coconut tree viz. leaf blight, bud rot, stem blending and wilt were recorded. Among the four diseases incidence of the leaf, blight was higher than others. In Jeshore incidence of all four diseases were recorded

Objectives:

The goal of the study is to identify major diseases of coconut.

Methodology:

A Benchmark survey was conducted at Barishal, Patuakhali, Jashore, Satkhira, Kushtia, Meherpur and Chuadanga to find out major disease problems and existing management practices using by the growers. A pre-designed structured questionnaire was used. From each district, two villages and 30 coconut growers from each village were interviewed.

Achievement/Findings:

During survey, Pestalotia leaf blight, bud rot, stem blending and wilt diseases were recorded in different locations. The highest (75%) leaf blight incidence was recorded in Barishal. The incidence of bud rot, stem blending and wilt diseases were very low in all the locations. In Jeshore 5% incidence of bud rot, 1% incidence of stem blending and 1.67% incidence of wilt were recorded. In all the locations growers do not apply recommended fertilizers and follow standard cultural management practices.
