Integrated Management of Die-back Disease of Malta

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study is continuing in the BARI Malta-1 orchards of Hill Agricultural Research Station, Khagrachari from January 2018 and the experiment will be continued until fruit harvest in September/October 2018. Three experiments as component-1(fungicidal spray), component-2 (pruning and sanitation) and component-3 (irrigation) are running at the moment. Among them, the component-3 experiment is already failed because of heavy rainfall during April-May, 2018. For component-1, five different groups of fungicides (Propiconazole, Carbendazim, Tebuconazole, Azoxystrobin 20% + Difenoconazole 12.5% and Azoxystrobin 20% + Tebuconazole 15%) are spraying. Them, until now N-Zim 50 WP (Carbendazim group) shows the lowest disease incidence (22%) followed by Tebuconazole group fungicide Folicure (25.67%) whereas control treatment (no fungicidal spray) shows the highest disease incidence of die-back (36.33%). In component-2, different cultural management practices (pruning, pruning + sanitation, sanitation) with control are following for die-back disease management of malta. Recent data shows that among them, pruning + sanitation practice gives the lowest incidence (22%) of die-back followed by only pruning (23%) while only sanitation practice shows 28% disease incidence. Control treatment (no pruning + no sanitation) shows the highest disease incidence of die-back (37.25) in BARI Malta-1.

Objectives:

This programme has been designed to find out proper management practices of Die-back disease of Malta

Methodology:

The study has been set up at Hill Agricultural Research Station (HARS), Khagrachari in January 2018. BARI Malta-1 orchard is selected for this experimental work. The experiments are not fully completed yet. Three experiments as component-1(fungicidal spray), component-2 (pruning and sanitation) and component-3 (irrigation) are running at the moment. Among them, the component-3 experiment is already failed because of heavy rainfall during April-May, 2018.

Componenet-1: Fungicidal spray

Five different groups of fungicides have been selected for this experiment. The treatments are given below:

T₁= Propiconazole (Tilt 250 EC) @ 1ml/l

T₂= Carbendazim (N-Zim 50 WP) @ 2gm/l

T₃= Tebuconazole (Folicure) @ 1ml/l

T₄= Azoxystrobin 20% + Difenoconazole 12.5% (Almera 32.5 SC) @ 1ml/l

T₅= Azoxystrobin 20% + Tebuconazole 15% (Kipper 35 SC) @ 1ml/l

T₆= Control

At field condition, the experiments were laid out in RCB design with 3 replications. One plant considered as one replication. Spraying of the fungicides was started just after light pruning at the beginning of February 2018. Fungicides are spraying once a month at a 30days interval and fungicidal spraying will stop just before one month of fruit harvest. Five sprays are already have done. Data have been recorded as percent disease incidence.

Componenet-2: Pruning and sanitation

Timely pruning and proper sanitation of any fruit orchards are very essential for disease management. The following treatments are taken for component 2:

T₁= Pruning

T₂= Pruning + Sanitation

T₃= Sanitation

T₄= Control

The experiments were laid out in RCB design with 4 replications. One plant considered as one replication. Pruning was done once a time at the beginning of the experiment. Proper sanitation also maintains from time to time when necessary from the starting of the experiment. Data have been recorded as percent disease incidence.

Achievement/Findings:

The fungicidal spray is found effective for die-back disease management of malta. Carbendazim group fungicide (N-Zim 50 WP) shows the lowest die-back incidence in malta plants compared to other tested fungicides. Besides this, the application of pruning + sanitation in malta orchards also shows lower disease incidence. So, further study is needed by combining fungicidal spray along with pruning + sanitation for effective management of die-back disease of malta.
