Anaerobic Soil Disinfection for Management of Soil Borne Pathogens

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Biotechnology Division, BARI, Gazipur in 2018. Four carbon sources viz. rice bran, composted cow dung, poultry refuse, seed meal of mustard were applied and saturated with water to made anaerobic conditions. The water-saturated plots were covered with black polythene mulch to see the effect of the incidence of wilt disease on Bt Brinjal-3 and BARI Brinjal-5. Among the four-carbon source, cow dung (10 t/ha) and mustard oil cake (4.4 t/ha) were best in controlling wilt disease caused by Sclerotium rolfsii. Bt- Brinjal-3 was highly susceptible to this pathogen compare to BARI Brinjal-5. Bt Brinjal-3 had rapid changes in disease growth over BARI Brinjal-5.

Objectives:

The goal of this study is to manage soil bone pathogen to increase crop yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the experimental field of the Biotechnology Division, BARI, Gazipur. The field was naturally infested with Sclerotium rolfsii, the causal organism of footrot and wilt disease of brinjal. Different organic matters (rice bran @ 4.4 t/ha, composted cow dung @ 10 t/ha, poultry refuse @ 5 t/ha, seed meal of mustard @ 4.4 t/ha) as carbon source were added with soil. After application of organic matter, the soil was saturated with water and covered with black polyethylene for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks, polyethylene was removed and kept the plot open for 1 week to evaporate gases that toxic to plants. Two brinjal varieties, Bt Brinjal-3 and BARI Brinjal-5 were used to compare the response of the treatments on varieties. The experiment was conducted following a factorial RCB design with four replications. The plot size was 3 × 2 m². Seedlings of two brinjal varieties were grown on sterile soil, and 30 days old seedlings were transplanted on the main field, where different organic matter was applied. Recommended doses of urea, TSP and MP fertilizers were applied before transplanting as a top dressing and at the different growth stages of plants. Data on a number of wilted plants and yield were recorded. Disease incidence data were recorded at 7 days, 14 days and 21 days after transplanting. Data were analyzed using statistical software “R” with package Agricolae and plyr. Mean was separated following Least Significant Difference (LSD) values of the mean of each treatment and varieties.

Achievement/Findings:

The experiment was conducted due to high disease infestation in that field in the 2017 cropping season. But in 2018 the disease incidence was very low. The disease incidence was ranged from 0 to 12.5 % in different plots amended with organic matter. The lowest disease incidence was recorded in treatment T₂ and T₄ where the soil was amended with cow dung and mustard oil cake respectively and they are significantly lower than the control plot where no treatment was applied. A significant difference was observed between the two brinjal varieties in disease incidence. Bt- Brinjal-3 was more susceptible to wilt disease caused by S. rolfsii than BARI Brinjal-5. Though Bt Brinjal-3 was resistant to shoot and fruit borer, lass resistant to wilt disease. In the case of interaction of variety and treatments, the lowest disease incidence was recorded in T₂ for both of the varieties, T₄ for both of the varieties and in T₃ only BARI Brinjal-5. Disease incidence of all the combinations of the 2 (Treatments and Varieties) factors was significantly lower than control treatment (T₅) for both of the varieties. The highest disease incidence was recorded in T₅(control) of Bt Brinjal-3 followed by BARI Brinjal-5. No significant difference was observed in treatments on yield. Comparing the unit change in disease progress over time, Bt Brinjal-3 showed rapid changes in disease progress over BARI Brinjal-5
