Screening of Tomato Lines /varieties Against Bacterial Spot Disease Under Natural Condition (2017 -2018)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted in the research field of Plant Pathology Division, BARI during the 2017-18 cropping season to evaluate the performance of twelve tomato lines/varieties against late blight disease. Three tomato lines showed a highly resistant reaction. Among the others, one line seemed to be resistant and two lines/varieties were moderately resistant. Among the 12 lines/varieties only four tomato lines were graded as moderately resistant against the disease. One line found susceptible and the rest of the lines/varieties seemed to be highly susceptible. Moderately resistant lines gave higher yield and low disease incidence.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to find out suitable varieties / lines against the disease for successful management of tomato in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

In order to find out the resistance source against the late blight of tomato were evaluated under natural condition. Tomato varieties/advance lines were collected from HRC, BARI, Gazipur. The experiment was conducted in the plant pathology research field, BARI. Total 12 lines/varieties were screened under field condition during the 2017-18 cropping season. The natural screening was performed during the period when the condition was favorable. The screening was done at 30, 60, 90 days after transplanting under field conditions. The symptom severity was recorded at 0-5 scale on each line following the method described by Akhtar et al., 2012

Achievement/Findings:

This experiment was established in the plant pathology research field against bacterial leaf spot disease under natural field conditions. Bacterial disease was not found in the 2017-18 cropping season but high disease incidence was found in this tomato field against late blight. The variable disease-resistant reaction was observed on the basis of PDI and disease score. Among the 12 lines/varieties only four tomato lines namely BARI Tomato-14. BARI Tomato-2, BARI Tomato- F_1-9 and BARI Tomato-11(Cherry) were graded as moderately resistant against late blight of tomato where PDI ranged from 25 to 30. One line namely BARI Tomato-3 was found susceptible and the rest of the lines/varieties seemed to be highly susceptible. Moderately resistant lines gave higher yield and low disease incidence.
