The Response of Groundnut to Boron Fertilization in High Ganges River Floodplain Soils (2015 – 2016)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field trial on groundnut (cv. BARI Groundnut-8) was conducted in High Ganges River Floodplain Soils (AEZ-11) at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi during the rabi season of 2015-2016. The objectives were to evaluate the response of boron on groundnut and to find out the optimum dose of boron for maximizing the yield. Treatments comprising six levels of boron ( 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 kg ha^-1) along with a blanket dose of N₁₂P₃₂K₄₂S₅₄Zn₂ kg ha^-1 chemical fertilizers were used in the study. The experiment was designed in Randomized Complete Block Design having three replications in each treatment. Among the treatments, B₅ (2 kg B ha^-1) gave the highest seed yield (2.32 t ha^-1) and stover yield (5.66 t ha^-1). However, from regression analysis, the optimum dose of boron was found to be 2.0 kg ha^-1_.for yield maximization of groundnut in the study area of High Ganges River Floodplain Soils of Bangladesh (AEZ-11).

Objectives:

To find out the requirement of boron in relation to nutrient uptake and yield of blackgram in this region.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted in High Ganges River Floodplain Soils (AEZ-11) of RARS, Ishurdi during the period of 2015-2016. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with 6 treatments replicated thrice. The unit plot size was 3m x 4m. There were six treatments viz. B₁= 0; B₂= 0.5; B₃= 1.0; B₄= 1.5; B₅= 2.0 and B₆= 2.5 kg B ha^-1 in this experiment. Besides a blanket doze of N₁₂P₃₂K₄₂S₅₄Zn₂ kg ha^-1 was applied in each treatment at the time of final land preparation. The tested groundnut variety BARI Groundnut-8 was sown at 19 November 2015. Ten plants were randomly selected from each plot for recording data on plant height; seed yield; 100-kernel weight and no. of pod per plant were also recorded after harvesting the whole plot. During the course of the experiment growth and development of plants in the field were carefully observed. The crop was harvested on 31 April 2016. Initial soil was also collected before the initiation of the experiment. The dry weight of seed and stover from each unit plot was recorded. Data on 100-kernel weight (g), stover yield and seed yield (t ha^-1) were also taken. All data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above discussion, we recommended that B at the rate of 2 kg ha^-1 along with a blanket dose of N₁₂P₃₂K₄₂S₅₄Zn₂ kg ha^-1 can be regarded as the best combination for the yield maximization (2.32 t ha^-1) of groundnut in High Ganges River Floodplain Soils of Ishurdi. The same trends were also observed in the previous two years.
