Prevalence of Seed Borne Pathogens of Ornamental Plants Grown in Bangladesh (2016 - 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The prevalence of fungi associated with seeds of some selected local flower namely cosmos, marigold, silvia and corm of gladiolus collected from three different locations (Jessore, Savar and Gazipur) were recorded. The Jessore’s seeds were better than the others considering the incidence of fungi in all other seeds tested. But silvia from Jessore was the lowest affected seed and marigold from Savar was the highest affected seed. Fusarium sp., Aspergilus flavus, Aspergilus niger, Rhizopus stolonifer, Alternaria alternata, Penicillium, Curvularia, Chaetomium and Cladosporium sp. comprising 9 species were found to be associated with the flower seed sample. The percent of seed-borne infection ranged 4-28%, 5-32.5%, 3-29% and 11-25% in the case of cosmos, marigold, silvia and gladiolus respectively. The result showed that the highest percent germination of cosmos (86.5%), marigold (77.5%), silvia (54.5%) obtained from Jessore and gladiolus (80%) obtained from Gazipur.

Objectives:

The present study has been done to study germination and prevalence of fungi in the seed of the selected local flower plants

Methodology:

Seeds of some selected local flowers namely cosmos, marigold, silvia and corm of gladiolus were collected from three different locations (Jessore, Savar and Gazipur). The samples were stored at 5 °C until use. For the detection of seed-borne fungi, the blotter method was used (ISTA, 2001) and plated two hundred seeds per sample. Three pieces of blotter paper were soaked in tap water and placed in plastic Petri-dishes (9 cm diameter), 25 seeds were plated per dish and incubated for seven days at 25 °C at 12 hr light and darkness. Seeds were then examined for fungal growth under a stereomicroscope. Pathogens were identified by their morphological characters like color, the structure of mycelium, types of spores and fruiting bodies using a compound microscope. The prevalence of pathogens was recorded from the infected seeds of the samples. Germination percentage was also recorded.
