Confined field trials of varieties were conducted at six different locations of Bangladesh to test the suitability of LBR potato crops in the country. Two clones viz. Diamant (check variety) and D-951(137) for Set-I, and SP-951 and Katahdin for Set-II were cultivated in six different parts of the country viz. Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute Central Farm, Joydebpur; Regional Horticultural Research Station, Comilla; Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore; Regional Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur; Agricultural Research Station, Bogra and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong. The field trial was laid out in Paired plot with four replications for Set-I and five replications for Set-II. To know the status of the microbial population in soil due to LBR potato cultivation, soil samples were collected and analyzed at the initial and post-harvest soil of the crop. The microbial population of the collected soils samples was counted in the Soil Microbiology Laboratory using Standard Microbiological Procedure. Data were analyzed statistically using MS-Excel and Paired t-test. The Rhizobium, PSB and Azotobacter population of initial soil ranged from 2.5×104 to 6.0×104, 2.0×104 to 3.0×104, 1.5×104 to 1.0×105, respectively. There was no significant difference between Diamant (check variety) and D-951(137) for Rhizobium, PSB and Azotobacter population of post-harvest soil. The overall result indicates that in Set-I, Rhizobium, PSB and Azotobacter populations ranged from 2.5×103 to 1.5×105. and in Set-II, Rhizobium, PSB and Azotobacter populations ranged from 5.0×103 to 5.0×105. Late Blight Resistant of potato varieties has no detrimental effects on soil microbial population.

To know the status of microbial population in soil due to LBR potato cultivation.

The confined field trials of Late blight resistance of potato varieties were conducted at six different locations of Bangladesh during rabi 2015-2016 to test the suitability of LBR potato crops in the country. LBR versus non-LBR potato varieties were cultivated in six different parts of the country viz. Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute Central Farm, Joydebpur; Regional Horticultural Research Station, Comilla; Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore; Regional Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur; Agricultural Research Station, Bogra and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong. Two sets of experiments were carried out. In all the locations, two clones viz. Diamant (check variety) and D-951(137) for Set-I, and SP-951 and Katahdin for Set-II were cultivated. The field trial was laid out in Paired plot with four replications for Set-I and five replications for Set-II. Unit plot size was 6.0 m × 3.0 m for Set-I and 6.0 m × 1.8 m for Set-II. Row to row and seed to seed spacing was 60 cm and 30 cm, respectively. The plots were fertilized with cowdung @ 10 t ha-1, 150 kg N, 32 kg P, 120 kg K, 19 kg S, 10.5 kg Mg, 4.5 kg Zn and 2.13 kg B ha-1 in all the locations were applied. Other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Soil samples were collected and microbial population was counted at initial and post harvest soil of the crop. The collected soils samples were analyzed in the Soil Microbiology Laboratory using Standard Microbiological Procedures. Initial characteristic of the soils of different locations has been presented in Table 1. Organic carbon and C:N ratio has been presented in Table 2. Data were analyzed statistically using MS-Excel, and Paired t-test. The soils of different locations were acidic in nature except for Jessore. Calcium, manganese, potassium, phosphorus, sulphur, iron, manganese and zinc are high in nature. Boron content was high at Joydepbpur, Comilla, Bogra and Hathazari while at Jessore and Rangpur it was at optimum level.  Copper content in Comilla, Rangpur and Hathazari was low. Carbon and nitrogen ratio was 10.9 to 11.1. Methods of chemical analysis: Soil pH was measured by a combined glass calomel electrode (Jackson, 1958). Organic carbon was determined by wet oxidation method (Walkley and Black). Total N was determined by modified Kjeldahl method. Calcium, K and Mg were determined by NH4OAc extraction method. Copper, Fe, Mn and Zn were determined by DTPA extraction followed by AAS reading. Boron was determined by CaCl2 extraction method. Phosphorus was determined by Bray and Kurtz method (Acid soils) and Modified Olsen method (Neutral + Calcareous soils). Sulphur was determined by CaH4(PO4)2.H2O extraction followed by turbidimetric turbidity method with BaCl2.

The results also indicated that Rhizobium, PSB and Azotobacter populations in initial and post-harvest soil had no significant difference and LBR potato had no detrimental effects on soil microbial population of post-harvest soil over check variety. From the trial, it may be concluded that LBR resistant gene in potato variety had no detrimental effects on the microbial population. Further, one or more years of study is required to verify the current year results.
