Evaluation of Cowpea Genotypes (2017 - 2018)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at RPRS, Madaripur during the Kharif-1 season of 2017-18 to select the potential high-yielding cowpea genotypes/lines. Eight cowpea genotypes viz. CPL-1/17, CPL-2/17, CPL-3/17, CPL-4/17, CPL-5/17, CPL-6/17, CPL-7/17 and CPL-8/17 with one check BARI felon-1 were evaluated in this trial. Results showed that all the characters under this study were significantly different among the genotypes except days to maturity, plant height and yield. There was no significant yield variation among the genotypes. Though, numerically CPL-3/17 gave the highest yield (1555 kg) followed by CPL-1/17 (1313 kg), CPL-4/17 (1192kg), CPL-2/17 (1086 kg), CPL-8/17 (1079 kg) and CPL-6/17 (1049 kg) where the lowest yield was obtained from CPL-7/17 (906 kg).

Objectives:

With a view to achieve cow genotypes with higher yield the present program was taken.

Methodology:

The experiment conducted at Regional Pulses Research Station (RPRS), Madaripur during the Kharif-1 season of 2017-18. Eight cowpea genotypes viz. CPL-1/17, CPL-2/17, CPL-3/17, CPL-4/17, CPL-5/17, CPL-6/17, CPL-7/17 and CPL-8/17 with one check BARI Felon-1 were evaluated in this trial. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4 rows × 4m and spacing was 40 cm × 4m. Seeds were sown in the rows on 08 February 2018. All recommended fertilizers were applied as basal dose during final land preparation. For ensuring germination of the seedling light irrigation was given after sowing. One weeding was done 35 days after sowing. Each of the entries was investigated from seeding to harvest and compared with checks. The crop was harvested after maturity. Data on yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot. Grain yield (kg/ha) was recorded from the whole plot. There was no incidence of disease. Data were analyzed statistically by using MSTAT-C program.

Achievement/Findings:

Significant differences were observed among the genotypes in yield contributing characters except for days to maturity, plant height and yield. The entries CPL-3/17, CPL-4/17 and CPL-7/17 flowered earlier (56 days) than others. Plant population/m² varied from 18.67-32.33. The maximum plant population was present in CPL-6/17 (32.33) and the minimum was in BARI felon-1 (18.67). In the case of branch/plants, the highest number was observed in BARI felon-1 (3.80) and the lowest in CPL-8/17 (2.33). The maximum (9.13) number of pods/plant were recorded in CPL-4/17 where the minimum (4.87) in CPL-2/17. Pod length varied from 15.37 to 17.09 cm. The tallest pod (17.09 cm) was recorded in CPL-6/17 and the shortest (15.37cm) in CPL-2/17. The highest number of seed/pod (19.13) was recorded in BARI felon-1 followed by CPL-1/17 (18.07). The maximum 100 seed weight (10.74 g) was obtained from CPL-1/17 and the minimum (9.76 g) in BARI felon-1. There was no significant yield variation among the genotypes. Though, numerically CPL-3/17 gave the highest yield (1555 kg) followed by CPL-1/17 (1313 kg), CPL-4/17 (1192kg), CPL-2/17 (1086 kg), CPL-8/17 (1079 kg) and CPL-6/17 (1049 kg) where the lowest yield was obtained from CPL-7/17 (906 kg). Considering all the characteristics, CPL-3/17, CPL-1/17 CPL-4/17, CPL-2/17, CPL-8/17 and CPL-6/17 could be selected for next year evaluation to find out the potentiality of the genotypes
