Evaluation of Pigeonpea Genotypes (2017 - 2018)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) is an important grain legume for resource-poor farmers in a marginal farming system. Five genotypes of pigeonpea were evaluated at Gazipur and Khagrachari during 2017-18 for yield-related traits. Among five genotypes G2 was found earlier and also produce the highest pods/plant compare to others. Apart from this G5 gave the highest 100 seed weight (8.38gm) from the rest of the genotypes.

Objectives:

The objective of the study was to evaluate improved pigeonpea germplasm for agronomic performance across the region under rain-fed field condition.

Methodology:

The experiment laid out in a RCBD design with 2 Replication at Pulses Research centre, Gazipur, and Khagrachari during 2017-18. Seeds were shown in the field on 14 September 2017. Each entry was sown in unit plot of 2 rows x 4m long with a spacing of 70 cm. Seeds were sown in the rows carefully by hands at 3 cm depth and covered by soils. Post sowing irrigation was given to ensure seed germination. In the experimental plots, fertilizers should be determined based on the results of a soil test. Fertilizers applied 20 - 25 kg N, 35 - 40 kg P ₂ O ₅, 30 kg K ₂ O per/ ha area as Basal dose at the time of sowing. Each of the entries was investigated from seedling to harvest. Grain yield was calculated from the whole plot. At maturity, the best individual genotypes were selected on the basis of earliness, disease reaction and higher yield.

Achievement/Findings:

Days to flowering: Results revealed that there was a significant difference among the genotypes. The genotype E₂ took a minimum of days to flowering (126) in gazipur location and Khagrachori location (162). The maximum days to flowering in the genotype E₅ in Gazipur location (137) and the genotype E₄in Khagrachori location (173) were recorded.

Days to maturity: revealed that there was a significant variation among various genotypes. The genotype E₂ took minimum days to maturity (178) in Gazipur location and Khagrachori location (203). The maximum days to maturity in the genotype E_4,followed by E₅ in Gazipur location (188) and the genotype E₄in Khagrachori location (210) was recorded.

Plant height (cm): Results pertaining to plant height showed that there was a significant difference among different genotypes. The genotype E₄ gained maximum height (85 cm) in Gazipur location and Khagrachori location (94). The minimum plant height of the genotype E₅ in Gazipur location (58) and Khagrachori location (62) was recorded.

Numbers of pods per plant: Results revealed that there was a significant difference among the genotypes. The genotype E₂ took a maximum number of pods/plant (276.3) in Gazipur location and Khagrachori location (128.42). The minimum number of pods/plant obtain the genotype E₃ (180.20), followed by the genotype E₄(187.40) in Gazipur location and the genotype E₃ (87.20), followed by the genotype E₄(91.00) in Khagrachori location was recorded.

100 seeds weight (g): Significant difference for 100 seed weight was also noted. Among the genotypes, E₅ showed a maximum 100 seed weight (8.38) in Gazipur location and Khagrachori location (8.20). The minimum 100 seed weight obtain the genotype E₄ (6.61), in Gazipur location and the genotype E₄ (6.20), followed by the genotype E₃(6.80) in Khagrachori location was recorded.
