A field experiment was carried out at Central Research Farm, BARI, Gazipur during 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 cropping years to develop irrigation scheduling under proper nutrient management for higher use efficiency and yield of broccoli with observing the changes in soil properties. There were twelve treatment combinations comprising four levels of irrigation i.e. I1: IW/CPE= 0.50, I2: IW/CPE= 1.00, I3: IW/CPE= 1.50 and I4: IW/CPE= 2.00 and three levels of nutrient management i.e. NM1: Fertilizer at STB dose, NM2: Fertilizer @ 80% of STB dose from inorganic fertilizer and rest 20% from organic manure, NM3: Fertilizer @ 120% of STB dose. The 2 factors experiment was set up in a randomized complete block (RCB) design with 3 replications. Different soil moisture regimes showed significant variations on the yield and yield attributes of broccoli and significantly the highest yield of broccoli was obtained from I3 (IW/CPE ratio=1.50) where the water use efficiency was maximum (0.9 cm-1). The lowest yield was found in I1 (IW/CPE ratio=0.50). Among the nutrients, IPNS based dose of fertilizers gave the significantly highest yield of broccoli, which was statistically similar to 120% STB-based dose. The lowest yield was obtained from STB fertilizers dose using the present recommendation.  Thus IPNS dose may be useful in saving the need for 20% chemical fertilizers and sustaining the yield of broccoli.

  1. To develop irrigation scheduling under given nutrient management options for higher water use efficiency and yield of broccoli.
  2. To observe the changes in soil properties.

A field experiment was conducted at Central Research Farm, BARI, Gazipur during 2015-2016 to observe the changes in soil properties and to develop irrigation scheduling under given nutrient management options for higher water use efficiency and yield of broccoli. There were twelve treatment combinations comprising four levels of irrigation i.e. I1: IW/CPE = 0.50, I2: IW/CPE = 1.00, I3: IW/CPE = 1.50, I4: IW/CPE = 2.00 and three levels of nutrient management i.e. NM1: STB dose, NM2: 80% STB dose from inorganic fertilizer + 20% from organic manure, NM3: 120% of STB chemical fertilizers dose were distributed in a RCB design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 5m x 4m and the variety used in the experiment was a green sprout. The spacing was 50 cm x 40 cm. The STB nutrient dose estimated as N-P-K-S-Zn-B of 140-39-58-12-1.5-0.7 kg ha-1 (FRG, 2012).  For the supplement of 20% STB nutrients, 5.6 t ha-1 cow dung was used for the treatment NM2 in addition to 80% inorganic fertilizers. All fertilizers except urea and MoP were applied as basal doses during final land preparation. Half of the cow dung and full dose P, S, Zn and B were broadcast and incorporated into the soil during final land preparation. The remaining cow dung as per treatment was applied in pits prior to transplanting. Nitrogen and K were applied in 3 equal installments as ring methods at 15, 30 and 45 DAT. The experimental soil was clay loam, slightly acidic in nature (pH 6.1) with very low organic matter content (0.66%). The 30 days old seedlings were transplanted on 01 December 2015. Soil samples were collected from 0-15 cm soil depth from each plot and analyzed in the laboratory following standard methods (Table 1a and 1b). Soil samples for moisture content determination were collected from each plot, from sowing to harvesting of broccoli according to IW/CPE ratio. All intercultural operations were done as and when necessary to raise a healthy crop. Harvesting was done when the curd attained a proper size and was at the right stage of maturity. The harvesting of edible broccoli curd was stated on 27 January 2016. The initial results of some important soil physical and chemical properties

From the two years result, it may be concluded that broccoli requires five (5) irrigations on the basis of IW/CPE ratio of 1.50 (I3). Broccoli needs a 20% extra nutrient dose over the present recommendation for maximizing the yield. However, the IPNS package formulated with 80% chemical fertilizer and 20% organic manure appeared as remunerative in augmenting the yield that could also save the extra 20% chemical fertilizers. IPNS package in combination with 5 irrigations on the basis I3 found as economically profitable with a higher benefit-cost ratio (3.17). The experiment should be repeated in the next year to draw a concrete conclusion.
