Effect of Tillage and Residue Management in Soil Moisture Retention and Productivity of Chickpea- T.aman Rice Cropping Pattern in BARInd Soil (2015-2016)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field trial was conducted at the farmer's field of FSRD site Kadamshahar, Godagari, Rajshahi during 2015-16 with an objective to observe the effects of tillage and residue management on soil moisture conservation and productivity of crops under Chickpea- T. Aman rice cropping pattern. The experimental site represents Deep Grey Terrace Soil under High Barind Tract (AEZ-26). The trial was set up in a split-plot design with three replications. Three tillage options viz. (i) ST = Strip tillage (ii) BP = Bed planting and (iii) CT = Conventional tillage in combination with three crop residue management practices, viz. (i) R₀= no residue, (ii) R₁=15% residue and (iii) R₂= 30% residue retention were employed in this study. The bed planting (BP) system gave the highest yield of chickpea (1.23 t ha^-1) followed by ST and lowest in CT. For the first crop, chickpea the effect of residue was not studied because there was no possibility to incorporate previous rice residue for chickpea. However, the experiment is in progress with the second crop T. Aman rice is in tillering stage till the preparation of the present report.

Objectives:

To observe the effects of tillage and residue management on soil moisture conservation and productivity of crops under Chickpea- T. Aman rice cropping pattern.

Methodology:

The field trial was conducted at the farmer's field of FSRD site Kadamshahar, Godagari, Rajshahi during 2014-2015. The soil of the experimental plots belongs to Amnura series under AEZ 26. The soil of the experimental field was analyzed in the laboratory of Soil Science Division, BARI, Gazipur. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three compact replications. Three tillage methods viz. (i) ST= Strip tillage (ii) BP = Bed planting and (iii) CT= Conventional tillage; and three residue management viz. (i) R₀= farmers practice (no residue) (ii) R₁=15% crop residue (iii) R₂=30% crop residue retention were employed in this study. The unit plot size was 5 m x 4 m. Tillage treatments were placed in the main plots and residue retention in the sub-plots. For the first crop, chickpea the effect of residue was not studied because there was no possibility to incorporate previous rice residue for chickpea. BARI Chickpea-9 was used as a chickpea cultivar. The recommended dose of P K S Zn B @ of 19-30-15-1.5-0.5 kg ha^-1 were used as per STB. All fertilizers except urea were applied as basal according to the individual plot at final land preparation. For N supplement, Rhizobium inoculum @ 50 g kg^-1 seed was used. Chickpea was sown in line, maintaining 30 cm with continuous sowing on 17 November 2015. Seeds of chickpea were sown in continuous in line maintaining a row spacing of 30 cm. Intercultural operations viz. pesticide spray were done in order to protect from insect damage. Soil moisture regimes of the experimental plots were recorded at a depth of 0-15cm at 15-day intervals. Data on yield components were collected from randomly selected 10 plants from each unit plot. The crops were harvested on 20 March 2016. For yield data, the whole plot was harvested at maturity and the recorded data was converted to ton per hectare. The data were analyzed statistically and the mean differences were adjudged by the Least Significant Difference Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984). However, the experiment is in progress with second crop T. aman rice is in tillering stage till the preparation of the present report.

Achievement/Findings:

Bed planting method of tillage gave significantly higher yield of chickpea followed by strip tillage and conventional tillage. The effect of residue retention could not be achieved as the experiment was initiated with chickpea. The experiment is in progress with second crop T. Aman rice is in tillering stage till the preparation of present report.
