Management of Sooty Mould of Mango (2016 - 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The in vivo experiment was conducted in the established mango orchard of Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong during 2016-17. Five treatments (Imidacloprid, Thiovit, Copper oxycloride, Cypermethrin with Propiconazole and Control) were conducted and showed good performance in controlling sooty mould of mango disease compared with control. Among the treatments, Thiovit and Admire showed better performance in reducing the sooty mold of mango. After 1st spray, the lowest disease severity was found in Thiovit (0.54) followed by Admire (0.57); and in the case of 2nd spray, the lowest disease severity was found in Admire (0.31) followed by Thiovit (0.33).

Objectives:

The experiment was conducted to study the effect of sooty mold on quality of mango and to improve the quality of mango through management practices.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the established mango orchard of Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong during 2016-17. Under this experiment, BARI aam-4 was used with three replications. Five different treatments namely: Imidacloprid, Thiovit, Copper oxycloride, Cypermethrin with Propiconazole and Control. These insecticides and fungicides were sprayed at the pre-flowering stage and pea stage of mango. At every spray schedule, control plants were sprayed with water. Disease severity was measured by disease scoring scale 0-4 where 0 = no infection on leaves, 1 = 1 to 10 % of leaf area covered, 2 = 11 to 25 % of leaf area covered, 3 = 26 to 50 % of leaf area covered and 4 = > 50 % of leaf area covered. A number of sooty mould infected shoots in respect of the severity scale out of 10 shoots of the selected tree were recorded (Manual for Mango Pest Surveillance 2012). Similarly, sooty mould infected fruits were recorded after harvesting. Ten-millimeter block of fresh fruits in each treatment was placed on PDA media for measuring mycelial growth of sooty mould. Data of mycelial growth was obtained after 72 hours of plating.

Achievement/Findings:

All the tested pesticides reduced sooty mould disease. Thiovit and Admire showed better performance in reducing the sooty mold of mango. After 1^st spray, the lowest disease severity was found in Thiovit (0.54) followed by Admire (0.57); and in the case of 2^nd spray, the lowest disease severity was found in Admire (0.31) followed by Thiovit (0.33). In both cases, Admire and Thiovit were found statistically similar results. The highest disease severity was found in Control (0.80 and 1.60 after 1^st and 2^nd spray respectively). Disease reduction over control ranged from 10.00-32.50 % and 57.50%-80.63% after 1^st and 2^nd spray respectively shown in table 3. Maximum disease reduction of sooty mould over control was recorded in Thiovit (32.50%) followed by Imidacloprid (28.75%)in 1^st spray; and Imidacloprid (80.63%) followed by Thiovit (79.38%) in 2^nd spray. In the case of both sprays, the minimum reduction was recorded in Propiconazole with Cypermethrin (10.00) followed by Copper oxycloride (16.25%) in 1^st spray; and Copper oxycloride (57.50%) followed 63.75% in 2^nd spray. The present study revealed a decrease in disease severity with an increase in spray frequency. It is also clear that insecticide or fungicide could not alone fully control this disease because infection of sooty mould fungi required honeydew which is secreted by sucking pests. Disease control is possible if complete eradication of sucking pests is ensured.
