Effect of Different Sources of Organic Manures on the Yield of Cauliflower (2018-19)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment on effect of different sources of organic manure on cauliflower was conducted in the Grey Terrace Soil (AEZ-28) of Gazipur during the year of 2017-2018 with the objectives to find out suitable organic manure for vegetable production and to find out the efficacy of different organic manure on producing vegetables. There were eight treatments viz. T₁: Native nutrient, T₂: Poultry manure @ 30 t ha^-1, T₃: Cowdung @ 50 t ha^-1, T₄: Farm Yard Manure @ 53 t ha^-1, T₅: Vermicompost @ 40 t ha^-1, T₆: Compost @ 47 t ha^-1, T₇: Tricho-Compost @ 33 t ha^-1, T₈: Bioslurry @ 40 t ha^-1. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. Data revealed that the T₅ treatment produced the highest yield of cauliflower 45.64 t ha^-1. This trend of influence was consistent for almost all the yield contributing characters of cauliflower. The native nutrient treatment produced the lowest yield (6.79 t ha^-1). Nutrient uptake by cauliflower curd was influenced by different treatments. The uptake of nutrients by cauliflower curd was highest in the treatment T₅ (vermicompost) followed by T₆(compost), T₇(tricho-Compost) and T₈(bioslurry) treatments. The lowest nutrient uptake was noted from T₆(control) treatment.

Objectives:

i. To find out suitable organic manure for organic vegetable production; and

ii. To find out the efficacy of different organic manure on producing organic vegetables

Methodology:

A field experiment on effect of different types of organic manure on cauliflower was conducted in the Grey Terrace Soil (AEZ-28) of Gazipur during the year of 2017-2018. The initial soil samples collected from the depth of 0-15 cm were analyzed in the laboratory following standard methods. Initial values of some important chemical parameters of the experimental soil recorded. From initial soil test results, the rate of different nutrients were calculated. Chemical analysis of cowdung, poultry manure, cowdung slurry, poultry slurry, Farm yard manure, compost, vermicompost and Tricho-compost were done. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Eight different treatments viz. T₁: Native nutrient, T₂: Poultry manure @ 30 t ha^-1, T₃: Cowdung @ 50 t ha^-1, T₄: Farm Yard Manure @ 53 t ha^-1, T₅: Vermicompost @ 40 t ha^-1, T₆: Compost @ 47 t ha^-1, T₇: Tricho-Compost @ 33 t ha^-1, T₈: Bioslurry @ 40 t ha^-1. The rate of different organic manures calculated to P equivalent for STB recommended doses. The unit plot size was 3m × 3m. The tested crop was cauliflower and the hybrid variety of cauliflower was Shnow White. Thirty one days seedlings of cauliflower was transplanted in line with 50 cm row to row and 50 cm seedlings spacing in 28 November 2017 at Gazipur. Fertilizer N-P-K-S-Zn-B was supplied from urea, TSP, MoP, Gypsum, Zinc sulphate, monohydrate and Boric acid, respectively. All PKSZnB and ¹/₃ of N were applied at the time of final land preparation. The remaining two third of N were applied as top dress at 30 and 60 days after sowing. Three irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when required. The cauliflower was harvested on 27 February 2018 at Gazipur. Data on yield and yield contributing characters were recorded and analyzed statistically using Statistics 10. LSD test was used to determine the significant differences between treatments. Plant samples and post harvest soil samples were collected from each plot for laboratory analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

The experiment was conducted in the year 2017-2018. Considering results of this year, the T₅ treatment produced the highest yield of cauliflower 45.64 t ha^-1. Statistically similar yield of cauliflower produced by T_6, T₇ and T₈ treatments. The native nutrient treatment produced the lowest yield (6.79 t ha^-1). The uptake of nutrients by cauliflower curd was highest in the treatment T₅(vermicompost) which followed by T₆(Compost), T₇(Tricho-Compost) and T₈(Bioslurry) treatments. The lowest nutrient uptake was noted from T₆(control) treatment. It is first year experiment. For confirming the results, the experiment should be repeated next year.
